Gaddafi's battered compound

Not much remains of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's home and compound in Bab al-Azizya in the capital city Tripoli. Rebels and other civilians stormed the compound and wrecked what many saw as the symbols of the old regime. Al Jazeera's correspondent Andrew Simmons went into Bab al-Azizya. He had this report.

They now claim to control most of the capital three days after entering the city. Rebels are on the square where Colonel Gaddafi used to make speeches to the nation. But exactly where Gaddafi is, no one seems to know. Smoke has been rising over the Libyan capital throughout Tuesday as a result of pockets of fighting between the two sides. Casualties are said to be mounting, although electricity in Tripoli has been restored after hours of a blackout.

Qaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya becoming a residential compound

Once a military barrack for former Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi, the partially destroyed Bab al-Aziziya compound is now home to dozens of new Libyan residents. Families have built their homes on rubble remains of the compound, six months after the capital Tripoli was seized by rebels and Qaddafi was consequentially ousted. While some residents say they moved to Bab al-Aziziya due to costs, some say conditions there aren't as habitable. The 24-year old Saja says the compound is empty and there with no running water or electricity. Other residents say they have already informed local authorities of their moving into the compound, and are settling in well. "Before, you wouldn't dare to even look at the walls from outside, and now we are living inside. I feel like a real Libyan citizen, with pride and dignity, to be able to live like this. No more taboos or sacred places I can't go to. As a Libyan it's my land and I can live wherever I want and go wherever I want," said Salem, another resident. Rebels displayed bold defiance as they trashed the former fortress of the autocratic leader in efforts to force Qaddafi to give up his complex of houses, offices and storage. The National Transitional council has drawn up alternatives in transforming the compound, for example into a park, but no plan has been solidified as of yet. "We hope the government will be fair and just. Even if living conditions aren't good or if they want to change it to a park, for sure if they move these ...

Libya: Strike hits Gaddafi compound in Tripoli - Sun, 20 March 2011

www.estadodemexico.com.mx A three-storey building in a military command centre used by Muammar Gaddafi has been destroyed in an air strike by coalition forces. The Sunday-night strike was the first reported attack on the Bab al-Azizia, a sprawling compound in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, that Gaddafi has used several times as a setting for televised addresses, and which was bombed by the United States in 1986. The regime invited journalists to visit the site of the attack early on Monday morning. Spokesman Mussa Ibrahim called it a "barbaric bombing" but said no one had been hurt. He declined to say whether Gaddafi himself was inside the compound. Al Jazeera''s Anita McNaught, reporting from Tripoli, was not invited to the scene but reported earlier that there had been an explosion in the area of the Bab al-Azizia and that smoke was rising from the area. Coalition forces from France, the United Kingdom, United States and other nations began striking the regime''s military assets on Saturday as part of an effort to enforce a UN Security Council resolution aimed at protecting Libyan civilians. Coalition officials told journalists on Monday that the building hit in the attack was a military command and control centre for Gaddafi. Tripoli hit for second day Other loud explosions rocked Tripoli on Sunday night, as Britain''s ministry of defence said one of its submarines had again fired guided Tomahawk missiles on Libyan air defence systems. "The principle firing happened ...

Horror Dead Gadhafi's Family Compound Brutal Torture

August 29, 2011 CNN is working with humanitarian organizations and medical officials to get help for the nanny, Shweyga Mullah. At a seaside compound in western Tripoli, the Gadhafi boys enjoyed a decadent lifestyle that his people could only dream about, while perpetrating unspeakable horrors on the staff that served their every whim. The first house we entered was apparently the "party" beach condo with an oversized door that led into sleek, modern, black-and-white rooms. It had been ransacked by the rebels, but still it was spectacular, with panoramic ocean views and plenty of evidence of the hedonism for which Hannibal Gadhafi -- one of Moammar Gadhafi's sons -- is famous. As we were about to leave, one of the staff told us there was a nanny who worked for Hannibal Gadhafi who might speak to us. He said she'd been burnt by Hannibal's wife, Aline. I thought he meant perhaps a cigarette stubbed out on her arm. Nothing prepared me for the moment I walked into the room to see Shweyga Mullah. At first I thought she was wearing a hat and something over her face. Then the awful realization dawned that her entire scalp and face were covered in red wounds and scabs, a mosaic of injuries that rendered her face into a grotesque patchwork. Even though the burns were inflicted three months ago, she was clearly still in considerable pain. But she told us her story calmly. She'd been the nanny to Hannibal's little son and daughter. The 30-year-old came to Libya from her native ...

But the 69-year-old dictator is nowhere to be found. Triumphant rebels seized Muammar Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli on Tuesday after a fierce battle with a loyalist rearguard. But it was unclear whether the "Brother Leader" or his sons were still somewhere in the complex's maze of buildings and bunkers. Rebel fighters poured into the sprawling Bab al-Aziziya headquarters compound, firing in the air in celebration after hours of heavy clashes. Defensive fire died away and hundreds of jubilant rebels poured in. Some smashed a statue of Gaddafi. Others hunted through dozens of buildings, unchallenged, seizing weaponry and vehicles. The rebels' envoy to the United Nations said the area was "totally in the hands of the revolutionaries." NATO said Gaddafi's whereabouts were unclear but were no longer a major concern. Western governments, which have backed disparate opposition groups, also said they could not be sure where the 69-year-old leader was. They have urged him to surrender after six months of civil war which have put an end to his four decades of absolute power.
