Understanding Paul - Galatians 1

The Epistle of Paul to the Galatians, usually referred to simply as Galatians, is the ninth book of the New Testament. It is a letter from Paul of Tarsus to a number of Early Christian communities in the Roman province of Galatia in central Anatolia. The author is principally concerned with the controversy surrounding Gentile Christians and the Mosaic Law within Early Christianity, see also Paul of Tarsus and Judaism. Along with the Epistle to the Romans, it is the most theologically significant of the Pauline epistles, and has been particularly influential in Protestant thought. Paul is thought to have composed this letter in grave concern and agitation. Indeed it is a rebuke to the Galatians. No original of the letter is known to survive. The earliest reasonably complete version available to scholars today, named P46, dates to approximately the year 200 AD, approximately 150 years after the original was presumably drafted. This fragmented papyrus, parts of which are missing, almost certainly contains errors introduced in the process of being copied from earlier manuscripts. However, through careful research relating to paper construction, handwriting development, and the established principles of textual criticism, scholars can be rather certain about where these errors and changes appeared and what the original text probably said. Romans and Galatians | School of Messianic Theology Teaching

mjbi.org | Click on this link for a free preview of one of our courses and additional school information. This course is a general survey of Paul's letters to the congregations in Rome and Galatia. There is a particular emphasis on practical issues related to personal spiritual life and doctrinal understanding, but it also deals with difficult passages related to Messianic Judaism. Participants in this class will learn of the power of the Gospel to transform lives as the class focuses on the meaning and impact of terms such as justification, sanctification, adoption, righteousness, condemnation, sonship, and other terms that are key to understanding Paul's purposes in these letters. The student will learn how believers are to understand the present day validity and relevance of the Torah or Law, even while considering statements indicating believers are "no longer under" law. The class will bring clarity on law versus grace issues, as well as help the student understand the importance of freedom from legalism while still embracing the Torah itself. Also discussed is the importance and place of Israel in Paul's thinking. While treated as a survey, special emphasis is given to Romans chapters 1-8 and the relevance of this material to practical spiritual life. www.mjbi.org | Click this link to learn more about the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute international schools and our English speaking e-learning school. Bearing Burdens (Galatians 6) John MacArthur

www.macarthurcommentaries.com Christians are continually (present tense) to bear one another's burdens. Bear has the thought of carrying with endurance, and burdens is from baros, which refers to heavy loads that are difficult to lift and carry. Used metaphorically, as here, it represents any difficulty or problem a person has trouble coping with. In this context the reference suggests burdens that tempt a sinning believer to fall back into the trespass from which he has just been delivered. A persistent, oppressing temptation is one of the heaviest burdens a Christian can have. To be freed from a sin is not always to be freed from its temptation. The spiritual believer who truly loves his brother and sincerely wants to restore him to a walk by the Spirit will continue to spend time with him and make himself available for counsel and encouragement. Prayer is the most powerful weapon believers have in conquering sin and opposing Satan, and nothing helps a brother carry his burdens as much as prayer for him and with him. The brother who has been delivered from a trespass has an obligation to let his spiritual friends help him carry his burdens, It is not spirituality but pride that makes a person want to "go it alone." James tells believers to "confess [their] sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that [they] may be healed" (James 5 God Himself is the believer's ultimate source of strength, and on Him we are called to cast our burdens (Ps. 5:22) and our cares (1 ...

On Galatians

Here is Martin Luther' s introduction to the Book of Galatians. Luther loved this Epistle. Luther often referred to this Book as his Katie Von Bora (Luther's wife). First given in 1532, then published in 1535. Found in volume 26 of the American Edition of Luther's Works. If you have not read Luther's lectures on Galatians, then obtain volumes 26 and 27 and read them carefully at once. In this introduction to the Book of Galatians, you will see Luther discuss Law / Gospel Distinction and The Two Righteousnesses. Two essential teaching ignored or unheard of by those who profess the heresies of Federal Vision, Lordship Salvation, Roman Catholicism, Mormonism, Arminianism, and so on.

Paul's Doubts about the Galatians (Galatians 4) John MacArthur

www.macarthurcommentaries.com My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you-but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. (Galatians 4 Speaking like a mother, Paul now addressed the Galatian believers as my children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you. He was not arguing like a lawyer before a skeptical jury but pleading like a parent to a wayward child. Children is from teknion, a diminutive that was used figuratively as a term of special affection. Literally, it referred to a small child, and therefore can be translated here as "little children," as in the King James Version. In light of Paul's figure of childbirth, both ideas are appropriate. The Galatian believers were extremely dear to Paul but were acting like infants who refused to be born. Paul's compassion was always evident. For example, to the Thessalonian church he wrote, "We proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. Having thus a fond affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us" (1 Thess. 2:7--8). With the Galatians, however, after having spiritually nursed them in their new life in Christ, he became again in laborwith them. "That is abnormal and unnatural," he implies. "You have already experienced the new birth, but now you are acting as if you need to be ...

Heaton Chapel Christian Church: Galatians 3: Faith or Fleshly Works Part 1 of 3

Preaching on Galatians 3, the spright Stan Smith emphasises God's freely given grace over fleshly works of our own. It is only through receiving His word into our hearts and standing on His promises that we shall succeed in being conformed into the image of Christ. Conversely, all attempts of 'whipping ourselves' into submission of good works and desperately upholding a law, the toil of our own hands, will end in vain with little efficacy. Stan Smith, pastor of Cornerstone Calvary Chapel in Eccles (UK) visited Heaton Chapel Christian Church on this occasion and preached at an evening service in 2007.
