He continues to maintain that a band of drug-crazed hippies actually committed the murders. In this scene, the FBI's Paul Stombaugh (Mitch Ryan) explains his theory of what actually happened the night of the killings to Colette's stepfather, Freddy Kassab (Karl Malden). Kassab, originally a fervent supporter of MacDonald's, later became convinced of his son-in-law's guilt and was largely responsible for finally bringing him to trial nearly 10 years after the muders. Haunted by her past, a young reporter named Gail Emory comes back to Trinity to reunite with her cousin Caleb and discover how her parents died. She and the Sherriff collide on many occasions and the sexual chemistry overtakes them both. However their relationship is anything but conventional. The Sherriff possesses supernatural powers and the ability to zero in on a person's weakness and tainted past. If you haven't seen it yet it's available on DVD and I strongly recommend that you look into it.
