#1 - Nicki Minaj, Linkin Park, and guest Ariel Chobaz

This week is the premiere of Pensado's Place with mixing engineer Dave Pensado, his manager Herb Trawick, and engineer Zan Nakari. They are joined in studio by mixing engineer Ariel Chobaz who recently worked with Nicki Minaj on her album. In this week's Into The Lair, Dave Pensado goes over some of his favorite new compressor and eq plug-ins that he uses on his mixes. They also break down the tracks for Linkin Park's 'Waiting for the End' in this week's Playback, and the group takes questions from viewers during Corner Office. Studio Bass Trap Build and Test

My take on building the "better" audio bass traps originally published by Ethan Winer. This video is part of a story I'm telling at gearslutz.com, where I'm posting links, pictures and audio related to the studio treatment. Check it out here: www.gearslutz.com And yes, I meant to say the lid is made of thin plywood, not fiberglass, and I meant to call the toggle nut a nut not a bolt. ;-)

Converter Test Session

On June 6, 2010 seven members of the Gearslutz audio forum got together to compare high- and low-end A/D converters. Everyone had to learn Ben Arthur's song "Tonight" on the spot and, for simplicity and audio purity, play all the way through in one take each! This video documents that session. We recorded five tracks using very high quality gear - a Michael Joly MJE-K47H microphone, Grace 101 preamp, and Lavry Blue converter. The preamp also fed an M-Audio Delta 66 sound card at the same time, recorded to a separate computer. Since we also wanted to include a very inexpensive sound card, the Delta files were re-recorded out of the Delta 66 into a SoundBlaster X-Fi card. Separate mixes were made from all three sets of files, and links to those mixes are on my web site: www.ethanwiner.com

interleaved split mono test.3gp

This is a test I did to see if I can hear the difference between a stereo interleaved track vs. a split mono track played back in protools. A discussion was started on gearslutz www.gearslutz.com suggesting that a noticeable difference can be heard and so I did a quick, non-scientific A/B test to see if I could tell which was which. What I heard was that the split mono sounded punchier, wider with more detail and depth ( all the things that digital generally seems to mess with). I thought this was a very interesting phenomenon and made my little test known on the gearslutz discussion board. Because this wasn't a very scientific test, a few people doubted my statement. I do trust my ears but I understand that it doesn't prove anything for me to just state what I heard so figured it was worth taking another 10 mins in the name of good research and good audio to do a better test. The guys questioning my impressions had done their own tests and said they could not hear a difference and because the two files "nulled completely" when polarity was invereted on one file, they concluded that that was proof that I was hearing things. So I performed my own null test and indeed they did cancel completely. But to my thinking and ears, that's not really proof, that's just theory - that if something nulls completely, it must sound exactly the same. So I then did my A/B listening test again (blindly, no camera) and I picked out the split mono 5 out of 5 times. So I then figured, I should ...
Roland Jupiter 80 Fantastic STUNNING sounds!!!

This video is fake. It was a joke! It's one of those "shreds" types of videos, you know. Sorry for pulling your legs. :-))) The "joke" point was that a player takes a $3k worth instrument to play.... a Lucky Man(?), making a viewer frustrated, mad, etc. I've explained details of the prank on the Gearslutz forum. And laughed my ass off for the whole day. In fact ppl around me though i was crazy (wtf is this guy laughing all the time) cause i was thinking about all the reactions ppl gave for the video in here and at the Gearslutz forum. I seriously considered choking myself the "Full Metal Jacket" style to stop the laughter because it went too far. Respect to Scott Tibbs!!! Disclaimer: The video was intended as a joke in best possible way. Cheers!!!
Michael Jackson's Genius: Vol. 1, Video 1

Michael Jackson: Musical prowess and composition. [Please, no rude, mean, or insensitive comments.] Volume 1, Video 1 of my series about Michael Jackson's genius. These videos will feature facts about his musical skill, his humanitarianism, and his philosophies on life. This particular video is about his musical skill in writing, composing, and arranging. This video is basic; it touches only on the fact that he DID compose, arrange, and write, and not how he went about doing so. I'm only JUST learning how to make videos, and so once I compile some clips, and get more quotes (even some from MJ himself), i'll make another video about his skill and his process. I got these particular quotes from: www.gearslutz.com These men had only GOOD things to say about Michael. I pretty much used exactly what they said, cutting out only things irrelevant to this topic. You may click the link to view the entire quotes. The graphics are courtesy Lovely artists Paige, Jeli and Monique at badassballerinas.info (Sorry for the oversight in the vid girls!) It's a really cool board for MJ fans! Please check it out! It's a nice enviroment, pretty much drama-free, and we focus on the fun topics more than the tragic, or controversial. Join to read, laugh, and have fun! I ask that commenters be kind! Rude comments will be removed. Discussions are welcome, but keep it friendly! No silly arguments, fighting, or unnecessarily rude language. Music: Stranger In Moscow- Michael Jackson Liberian Girl ...

Akai MPC1000 JJOS2XL Grid Edit Demo

Just a quick little demo I made for one of the GearSlutz members. Sorry about the fact that I used the camera's audio, but I'm gelatinous and lethargic. So anyway, this is just a demonstration of the grid edit mode in JJOS2XL. The guy asking about it was wanting to dismiss it because in JJOS1, it's not quite x0x-like, and you have to program in while the pattern is stopped, otherwise it's just realtime step input with a pretty GUI when you're playing the pattern. He's actually right, and this is included in the later versions of JJOS as well, however, JJ introduced into a later version (not sure if it was in JJOS2 as I haven't spent much time with it) an extra layer to the grid edit to where you can look at one drum part a bar at a time and edit it while it's playing, sort of x0x-style. While the basics of this are a little more tedious than on a 909 because you can't just reach over and switch on/off steps, there are little caveats that make it a little faster (selecting more than one slot at a time) and actually are a little more creatively implemented (instead of simple on/off, each slot is set up to where you input the velocity.) The vid starts with grid editing of my 522 as a contrast just to show how that works. I then dive into the extra editing mode and show how that works followed by a simple demonstration of the new (and far improved if I might say so myself) version of the copy and paste function. Next I demonstrate how the grid editing for a track designated ...

Comping and Flex with Multitrack Drums in Logic Studio 9

It took me a while to figure out a good and fast workflow. We recorded the drums in Pro Tools, so getting the recorded drums into Logic for comfortable comping and flexing is a bit tricky. If you do it this way, it's like you had recorded the drums in Logic and you can easily switch between comping (selecting the best bits of each take) with the quick-swipe feature and flex (adjusting timing, quantizing, etc.). Stevie Wonder Superstition Remix

DOWNLOAD THE HIGH QUALITY MP3: www.sendspace.com It's not a "remix" in the sense that it's electronic music. This is the original multitrack recordings of the song that I mixed to be clearer. I sampled the drums to get better, more modern drum tones, and reamped the bass through the Ampeg plugin. I also EQ'd every track using the SSL Channel Strip plugin, and then compressed with the Urei 1176 Compressor. Mixed on ProTools. Mastered with T-Racks.

Here is a little movie of ProRemote in action connected to a ProTools LE rig. The developer (Alex le Lievre) did this one a bit closer up for folks who thought his previous video was a fake.
