"Behind the Numbers" highlights some of the achievements of the GEF over its 19 year history through the images and the stories of four different projects in various parts of the world. In Mali, efforts by the GEF, the World Bank, and the government of Mali are helping local communities develop while preserving the region's rich biodiversity, such as the elephants of Gourma. In Bhutan, people are racing against time to prevent a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF)--which locals call "silent tsunami." Here, we follow the efforts of engineers and 300 local laborers, with the help of the GEF and UNDP, to prevent a GLOF in the country's Lunana region. In Brazil, support from the GEF is helping the Amazon Region Protected Areas Program manage and preserve up to 60 million hectares of critical forests and ecosystems. And lastly, in China, the GEF documents the meteoric rise of China's renewable energy sector and the catalytic role played by GEF and the World Bank.
