Rage Against the Regime: Georgia protests in face of force

Thousands of protesters have been rallying for several days now in Georgia with the goal to overthrow President Mikhail Saakashvili. The opposition has vowed to take radical action by Wednesday saying that the current regime must go by then. Russia has condemned the dispersal of demonstrations with tear-gas and rubber bullets, saying it violates fundamental human rights. Opposition parties claim early elections are needed to stop what they're calling a "criminal" regime leading the country to disaster. The main opposition leader Nino Burdzhanadze told RT that people will continue to protest even if the government uses force. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Georgian embassy staffer attacks topless protesters

Half-naked political activists have been brutally dispersed by an embassy employee while protesting in Kiev in support of Georgian photo journalists accused of espionage. A local journalist is reported to have been injured during the dispersal. A group of girls from the Ukrainian FEMEN movement gathered in front of the Georgian embassy in Kiev on Monday, holding huge fake cameras and posters saying "No pictures -- no democracy!" During the protest, which was meant as part of an international campaign backing the Georgian photo journalists recently arrested on espionage charges, a man emerged from the embassy and attacked first the topless activists, and then one of the journalists who was taking photos of the event. The attacker turned out to be one of the embassy employees. The correspondent, from the local Kommentarii newspaper, Aleksandr Yamkovoy, was injured as the embassy employee hit him hard on the head. He was taken to hospital. According to FEMEN activists, the actions taken by the Georgian embassy only prove "the international community's suspicions that official Tbilisi is media-phobic." "Members of the embassy demonstrated a lack of respect for all democratic values: freedom of speech, freedom of association. Thus we are even more worried about the journalists who were arrested in Georgia," stated the FEMEN activists. The Georgian Embassy in Kiev has reacted by firing the employee responsible for the physical abuse of the protesters and journalists. The ...

Silent Killers? People go missing after brutal police crackdown

The fate of many opposition supporters remains unknown in Georgia, nearly two weeks since a brutal police crackdown on protesters in the capital, Tbilisi. While President Saakashvilli claims to be a champion of democracy in the country, human rights groups say finding out what's happened to the missing people is practically impossible. And as RT's Sara Firth reports some families fear they will never see their loved ones again.

Protest for Troy Davis Cleveland,Ohio Sept 16,2011

For those unfamiliar with the Troy Davis story, it has been underway since August 1989, and begins in Savannah, Georgia, where an off-duty police officer was murdered while allegedly providing assistance to a homeless man under attack. Since then Davis' has become the seminal death penalty case of the 21st century. AFP reports that yesterday "petitions with 663000 names were handed to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles urging clemency," which will be considered by the court on Monday. Today from Hong Kong to Paris, Latin America to the United States, over 300 protests are being held to urge the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to reconsider using the death penalty with Davis. The story has all the makings of a trial gone wrong: since 1996 seven of the nine prosecution witnesses have recanted all or part of their testimony, the stanchest witness is the original suspect, and no physical evidence was retrieved linking the accused to the crime. The larger issue, of course, is putting people to death for crimes, not to mention crimes they deny committing...film by sam phillips liberation brew tv

Fresh clashes as Georgia cracks down on anti-Saakashvili demo

In Georgia, riot police have used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse anti-government demonstrators. Hundreds of opposition members have gathered for a second day of protest in the capital Tbilisi. Many more are said to be on their way to join the rally. Opposition leaders say hundreds of people have been arrested by the authorities. On Saturday, thousands marched through Tbilisi, calling for Mikhail Saakashvili to step down immediately. Demonstrators claim they've been robbed of their freedoms, and say Saakashvili's presence at the top puts the whole region at risk. According to opposition groups, 13 people were injured and several detained, as police raided one of their offices in the middle of the night. Opposition leader Nino Burdjanadze says the government clampdown has entitled the people to act in self defence. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Last-Ditch Appeals As Troy Davis Execution Nears

ATLANTA — Troy Davis, the condemned inmate who convinced hundreds of thousands of people but zero appellate courts of his innocence, waited to be executed Wednesday as his supporters held vigils outside Georgia's death row and as far away as London and Paris. His offer to take a polygraph test was rejected. So was his request for the pardons board to give him one more hearing. His attorneys again challenged the evidence that helped convict him of killing off-duty police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989, but a Georgia court rejected the bid. Davis' supporters tried increasingly frenzied measures, urging prison workers to stay home and even posting a judge's phone number online, hoping people will press him to put a stop to the 7 pm lethal injection. "We're trying everything we can do, everything under the law," said Chester Dunham, a civil rights activist and talk show host protesting in Savannah, where MacPhail, 27, was killed. Outside the Jackson prison that houses Georgia's death row, about 100 people gathered early Wednesday afternoon for a prayer rally. As they shouted, "Free Troy Davis!" a man in a red SUV drove by and shouted, "Kill him! Kill him!" Several dozen people gathered outside the White House to protest the execution. They held signs condemning it as a "lynching" and chanted "Too much doubt" and "What do we want? Justice!"

Fifth day of protests against Georgian president

Demonstrations to oust President Mikhail Saakashvili are continuing in Georgia for a fifth consecutive day. Hundreds of people are on the streets of the capital Tbilisi, some maintaining a vigil outside the state television's studios. Though the number of protesters has decreased, those still taking part remain defiant. Speaking to reporters, opposition leader Nino Burjanadze said "the situation is very difficult. It's not because people don't want to fight, it's because they're scared of the dictatorship. In any case, we will continue this struggle." ... www.euronews.net

DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier tells WTOP that police "are going to have to require some compliance with traffic laws since we have folks being injured." Protesters marched to DC police headquarters Monday afternoon, accusing police of not properly investigating the hit-and-run incidents Friday evening. They say police did not talk to key witnesses or the victims. They also claim it was the same silver Lexus that struck protesters a block and a half apart. Protester Heidi Sippel says she was never questioned about the car that hit her, even after she asked to give a statement at the hospital. She says the car actually turned down the wrong lane to run her and her son over. Her pregnant wife was forced to jump out of the way of the oncoming car. Sippel was charged with obstructing traffic.
