The Great Depression of 1929 destroyed the lives of thousands of US citizens, its effects stretching as far as Europe. Bruce Springsteen's song "The Ghost of Tom Joad" from his third and most successful album "Born to Run" describes the aftermath of the crash, and the now poverty-stricken, depressed and desperate people of America. This is my first video so I don't know if it's any good or not, but enjoy. :)

This is a cover version of "Ghost of Tom Joad" performed by Joakim Ramstedt of Slowburn. The song is written by Bruce Springsteen for his album with the same name. As a foreigner I can't vote in this election, but since the whole world is affected by the outcome, we should really have the right. This is a comment regarding the financial crisis we are seeing. Caused by greed and people that never seem to get enough as always. This is also in a small way my contribution, to help the Obama campain. I believe this might be the most important election in modern history. If it was up to me I'd put every politician, bankmanager, stockbroker, general and lawyer on a spaceship and get rid of the lot of them, but as long as we're stuck getting screwed we migh as well vote for the ones that at least seems to have a working brain. And of course most imortantly, a working heart.

I know I'm only an Englishman, and therefore not best placed to comment, but in my opinion, this song, whether performed acoustically or otherwise (as in this case) is simply one of the very best modern America "folk" songs. And when it's written by none other than the great Bruce Springsteen, and played so emotionally and powerfully by Bruce, the E Street Band and The NightWatchman himself, Tom Morello, it is just absolutely astounding! You can find this among with many other gems on The 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Concert from October 24th & 25th 2009. The Ghost of Tom Joad
My Project for this autumn was going to be based on the Bruce Springsteen/Johnny Cash working of "Highway Patrolman", but I read "The Grapes of Wrath", finally saw the link with the Springsteen song with the main character's name and decided it was a worthy theme for a short video project. Of course this is not a new subject for You Tube and I have to admit that I was influenced greatly by the work of YachiruXx (respect) in developing my own version. What I've tried to do is to strengthen to link to the period and the book and the film and Fonda's words in particular, and to recognise the work of Dorethea Lang, in capturing the images of the plight of the "Okies" during and after their migration across America, which in turn inspired Steinbeck in writing his novel. I wanted my film to be widescreen so this has meant editing and panning across the original images. I searched the Internet for the highest resolution images I could find and some are so clear they could have been taken yesterday. Thanks to all the artists who have made their material available in this way and to the people whose images I have used. The same goes for the stills from the film and the images of Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. It is customary when making a work of this kind to try and make it relevant for "today" and I thought about using images of Paternoster, Libya or Dale Farm. In the end I decided against it as I believe to use contemporary images would ultimately date the piece; as Tom Joad said "I <b>...</b>
