Ghostly International Presents... Deastro

Chicago-based photographer/videographer James P. Morse--a longtime friend and collaborator of Ghostly's--followed Chabot around Detroit for a day and edited the footage into "Ghostly Presents: Deastro," a video profile whose warm, colorful aesthetic matches Chabot's energy and positivity to a T. Chabot putters around his Detroit home, visits his favorite bookstore, gushes about Isaac Asimov and Simone de Beauvoir, and plays a sweaty, packed show with his band. It's a loving portrait of an artist who stays true to his beliefs, staying passionate, engaged, and creative in all of his endeavors. Deastro's full-band debut, Moondagger, arrives on June 23rd, and his "Vermillion Plaza" single -- along with its B-side, a squelchy, lumbering remix by Ghostly Swim featured artist Mux Mool -- drops May 12th on Ghostly International. ghostly.com

Mux Mool - Lady linda (ghostly international)

At first blush, Mux Mools Lady Linda seems an unconventionally low-key choice as the first single from the hyperactive producer. Lady Linda (from Mux Mools debut full-length Skulltaste) doesnt come roaring out of the gates—rather, it takes its time, shifting from foot to foot like a trench-coated figure in an alley, clutching a bone-dry breakbeat with a pocket full of vintage keyboard tones. But as the track progresses, the underlying sophistication of Mux Mools homespun hip-hop begins to take hold and Lady Linda reveals herself, blossoming with lush Detroit strings and a melancholy melody. By contrast, B-side Hog Knuckles picks up the pace with a deft cut `n paste guitar riff and a blithely stuttering beat. Taken as a whole, then—a warm, sweet A-side and a tart B-side—Mux Mools first single may in fact be the perfect introduction to the multifaceted artist. As with all Muxs best work, the musics pleasures lurk just below the surface.

Ghostly International Presents: Choir of Young Believers

In this introduction to Ghostly's newest signees, Danish orchestral-pop collective Choir of Young Believers, we see bandleader Jannis Noya Makrigiannis and his cellist companion, Ceciele Trier, taking their first trip to New York City. The pair seem in their own world -- even in the thick of NYC's melting pot -- as they wander serenely through the city and play an intimate evening gig. The clip is soundtracked by "Wintertime Love," a particularly time-stopping track from Choir of Young Believers' upcoming full-length, This Is for the White in Your Eyes. Aeroc - "For Sake"

Release Info: ghostly.com Artist info: ghostly.com Geoff White had been building a reputation for heady minimal techno until his debut full-length as Aeroc, Viscous Solid, revealed a particular genius for placing acoustic sounds in a decidedly digital context. While seven years removed from that release, Aeroc's R+B=? displays the same out-of-time qualities as its predecessor. Melody is paramount on R+B=?'s eleven gentle instrumental pieces. Most feel as though they were written on acoustic guitar—before White's tinkering production frayed the edges, amplified subtle resonances and teased counter rhythms out of the space between his strings—but it's the simple, undeniable tunefulness and musicianship that makes R+B=? so memorable. Although White limits his source material, R+B=? can't truly be described as minimal, as there's a pervasive rich, earthy melodicism coursing through the remarkably unified album. Along the way, strains of future-funk ("If I Had the Time"), pseudo hip-hop beats ("Playing String"), languorous balladry ("It Does Easy"), spiraling glitch workouts ("Avalon Blonde") and echo-drenched snares ("Some Kisses") work their way into the mix of guitar and keys.

Choir of Young Believers - "Action/Reaction"

The most striking thing about Action/Reaction, the anthemic debut single from Choir of Young Believers' full-length This Is for the Whites in Your Eyes, is, appropriately enough, the use of voices. Choir leader Jannis Makrigiannis is blessed with a one-of-a-kind instrument - an elastic, versatile keen that he sprinkles liberally throughout Action/Reaction. A neatly criss-crossed figure of Jannis' wordless ahs open the song, weaving in and out of the arrangement and chasing his lead melody until they reach the song's chorus, a classic call-and-response between Jannis' invocations of a better place and some robust group harmonies. Action/Reaction's loping beat and air of symphonic grandeur may be the first things you notice, but its Choir of Young Believers' namesake vocal polyphony that keeps the goosebumps a-coming. ghostly.com theghostlystore.com

Syntaks - "Blue Sunshine" Video

The hypnotic video for Syntaks' "Blue Sunshine" -- a gorgeously lumbering standout from the Danish duo's Ghostly International debut, Ylajali -- is an all-to-appropriate analog to the pair's approach to music-making: a wash of color, fleeting glimpses of half-remembered imagery both heavenly and apocalyptic, and vertiginous shifts in scale superimposed over its creators' faces. Syntaks' Jakob Skott directed the clip, and his clear love of its subject matter (his musical collaborator and romantic partner, Anna Cecilia) is apparent throughout.

Choir of Young Believers - "Patricia's Thirst"

Release info: ghostly.com Artist info: ghostly.com Choir of Young Believers, led by Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, garnered an imposing number of accolades in their Danish homeland for a debut full-length. That release, This Is for the White in Your Eyes, signaled the arrival of a powerful new talent, possessed of a fully formed vision, arch compositional ingenuity and a tenor to die for. Matthew Dear "Don and Sherri"

From the album Asa Breed on the Ghostly International label, this video premiered on MTV2's subterranean, 10.22.08. Directors Judy Welfare and Jeremy Hollister capture much of the song's fervent busyness by using a special 5 camera rig splayed out in a semi-circle and attached to the bed of a truck. With Dear literally hanging out over the street, they used mirrors to create a layered effect, similar to the vocals on Don and Sherri, except these shots were achieved for real, in-camera.

Matthew Dear's latest audio/video excursion combines the upbeat title track from his new 'Headcage EP' with mesmerizing abstraction from London-based director Morgan Beringer. The upbeat future-pop and signature Dear croon of "Headcage" meet shifting quasi-geological patterns, which eventually morph into hazy, near-perceptible flashes. Certainly a turn towards the light, following Dear's work for 2010's 'Black City.' 2012 will see a new full-length from Matthew. Deastro - "Light Powered"

Culled from the best of Randolph Chabot's home-recorded output over the last decade, Keepers is a loose best-of a tour through the many worlds of Deastro. All of his genre-hopping — shy synth-pop to instrumental robot-rock, whisper-soft ballads to sky-high anthems — would be nothing if not for his deliriously fizzy production and soft-focus melodies. Keepers is a strange amalgamation of an artist's various obsessions, disjointed but held together by sheer force of will, coming from humble origins but belying grand ambitions of beauty, positivity, and imagination. ghostly.com theghostlystore.com

SMM: Context is the first release in Ghostly International's new yearly compilation series of evocative, exploratory music. In 2004, Ghostly International introduced SMM, an unknown acronym used to evaporate the already-unspooling musical boundaries between classical minimalism, electronic and drone composition, film soundtracks, and fragile imaginary landscapes. SMM: Context features a hand-picked selection of some of the world's finest musicians from Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, North America and the UK who traffic in SMM's slow-moving, texture-focused compositions, simple in instrumentation but infinitely complex in execution. Mux Mool - "Ballad of Gloria Featherbottom"

"I think beat-making is really the study of every kind of music," says Brian Lindgren, the artist known as Mux Mool. On Skulltaste, Lindgrens full-length debut on Ghostly International, the producer was determined to explore every corner of his beat-steeped psyche, and the resulting document is a masterpiece of eclectic cohesion: chunky instrumental hip-hop sits next to new-wave anthems and dubby dancefloor bangers, which abut skittery slices of DnB and made-up video-game soundtracks. Skulltaste may cover a lot of ground, but Mux Mool pulls it off. He even makes it look easy. Skulltaste is an old-fashioned epic, and its diversity—both track-to-track and within the songs themselves—is hard to measure. Lindgrens taste roams all over the map, but its this attention-deficient approach that makes Skulltaste such a smorgasbord of an album, tempting the listener with one tidbit after another. Opener The Ballad of Gloria Featherbottom hits a quintessential balance between giddily spiraling samples cooled by monstrous slabs of ice-water synth; later, Get Better John has a teary-eyed uplift, conjuring a mood somewhere between 90s R&B and the Chrono Trigger soundtrack; and the entertainingly titled SFW Porn pairs a boom-clap beat to clear-blue keys and a lazily scribbled guitar line. On Skulltaste, Mux Mool tirelessly doles out 20 tracks in 80 minutes, with not a moment of filler. Lindgrens stylistic blast zone is so wide, that one might think he was pandering, trying to be all <b>...</b>
