Ernie Anderson's Ghoulardi was Cleveland's most legendary and infamous late night TV horror movie hosts. From 1963-1966 he ruled the airwaves. This clip features his notorious joke about playing poker. How he got away with this in 1964 is anybody's guess.

This is a short preview of the Ghoulardi section of the documentary American Scary, which looks at the nation's tradition of horror hosting, from Zacherley to A. Ghastlee Ghoul. Hosts of all kinds were once a staple of television, and especially local television productions. But as production demands and the availability of cheaper syndicated material changed the local TV business model, local hosts were also one of the first things to go, no matter how popular they were with the viewing public. With interviews and footage from major hosts from the 1950s to the present day, such as Zacherley, Vampira, Ghoulardi and others, along with memories from celebrities and fans who were influenced by these hosts, you'll follow this American folk art form from its glamorous beginnings, through repeated waves of popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, to its scrappy resurgence and survival in the current age of cable access and the Internet. Ghoulardi flies again in Flugtag
Bob Ferguson and his team construct and fly the Ghoulardi Glider in the Red Bull Flugtag competition in Cleveland, OH (2004). The Ghoulardi Glider was built as a tribute to Ghoulardi, the popular TV host (played by Ernie Anderson) on Cleveland television station WJW-TV from 1963-66.

At this time, Tim was going by Tom Conway, only changing his name when he went to Hollywood because someone else was already using the name Tom Conway. Ernie Anderson would become a legend in Cleveland as horror movie host Ghoulardi, eventually moving to Hollywood to become one of the most recognizable voices on television as the announcer of "The Looove Boat" and "America's Funniest Home Videos." The advertiser, Laub Baking Co., was a Cleveland mainstay from 1889 when immigrant Jacob Laub began selling bread out of his home until the large conglomerate closed in bankruptcy in 1974.
