Giant pandas at the Bifengxia Panda Base celebrated their first collective birthday in Southwest China's Sichuan Province. The panda base, run by Ya'an City's China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, hosted the event late last week. Hundreds of volunteers from neighboring cities and abroad visited Ya'an to celebrate the occasion. Trees at the panda base were decorated with heart shaped birthday cards. Ice cakes filled with bamboo, apples, carrots and bananas were made for each panda. US-born giant pandas Hua Mei and Mei Sheng headed the celebrations. The two were relocated to the base after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake damaged a panda breeding center in nearby Wenchuan County. Celebrations also included Fu Long, an Austrian-born giant panda who has been at the base since late 2009. The base is also home to Tai Shan, who was born at a zoo in Washington, DC Two other US-born pandas, Su Lin and Zhen Zhen, are from San Diego.

The first Giant Pandas to live in Britain for more than 20 years have arrived at their new home in Scotland. Tian Tian and Yang Guang - or Sunshine and Sweetie - arrived at Edinburgh Airport this lunchtime looking none the worse for the five thousand mile journey. Now Zookeepers hope the 8-year-olds will settle in so well they could produce Scotland's first native born panda cub. Sky's James Matthews was there to welcome them.

04-Dec-2011 Working in conjunction with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) and the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA) in China, FedEx Express will fly two giant pandas non-stop from Chengdu Airport in China to Edinburgh Airport in Scotland on a specially-chartered Boeing 777F known as the "FedEx Panda Express." Tian Tian (甜甜, aka Sweetie), an eight year-old female panda, and Yang Guang (阳光, aka Sunshine), an eight year-old male panda from Chengdu's Bifengxia Panda Base, will travel onboard the specially-decaled Boeing 777F -- the world's largest twin-engine aircraft and the most fuel efficient wide-body in the FedEx fleet. Their arrival will mark the first time in more than 17 years that giant pandas will reside in the United Kingdom. The UK's last giant panda, Ming Ming, left London Zoo to return to China on October 26, 1994. Currently, conservationists estimate that only 1600 pandas remain in the wild. The Pandas at Edinburgh Zoo are enjoying their stay so far but in different ways. Yang Guang, the male, who is also known as Sunshine, has been exploring his enclosure and spending hours in full view of the zoo's keepers. Tian Tian (Sweetie) has been more reticent and remains out of sight much of the time . Television crews were allowed to film at the panda enclosures earlier. Paying visitors will be allowed in to see the giant pandas for the first time on Friday.

Two giant pandas being loaned to Edinburgh Zoo from China have arrived in Scotland after flying on a specially-fitted private plane. There were cheers and bagpipes were played to welcome Sunshine and Sweetie as their aircraft approached the runway following an 11-hour journey. They were then taken off the jet one by one in crates ahead of their trip by road to the zoo. The seven year olds had been given a breakfast of carrots and protein cake before passing through customs in China. Their individual crates, each labelled "one panda", were then loaded on to the Boeing 777, with a panda face on the side, that transported them to Edinburgh Airport. On board, Sunshine and Sweetie, who are being loaned to the zoo by the Chinese government, enjoyed an in-flight meal of bamboo. Adult pandas eat around 4kg of the plant a day. "Pandas can feel quite stressed when they're in the air," said Dr Tang Chunxiang, a vet from China's Giant Panda Research Base who accompanied the pair during the flight. "To calm them down I'll talk to them. I'll say 'don't worry, I'm here with you'". Sunshine and Sweetie were flown by a team of four pilots, all of whom donned kilts in honour of the journey from Chengdu in western China, to Scotland. "These are precious animals," said the head of the flight crew Captain Paul E. Cassell. "They'll be looked after like first class passengers." Yun Zi was born on August 5, 2009 and was the fifth cub born from his mother Bai Yun and fourth cub to his father Gao Gao. Yun Zi was conceived through natural mating.
