The relaxed Life of mating Giant Tortoises on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos!

Hope you enjoy the videos of our trip to the paradise of the Galapagos Islands. Truly the best destination to choose when going to Ecuador. We choose to spend some days on Santa Cruz Island do-it-yourself style and afterwards going on a cruise to visit the beauty of the Southern Islands of the Galapagos: Plaza Sur, Santa Fe, Espanola and San Cristobal. The first days we enjoyed Tortuga Bay and the tourist life of Puerto Ayora. Also we took a bay tour around Puerto Ayora and saw the giant Tortoises! On first class yacht Galapagos Voyager (highly recommended) we first visited the Charles Darwin Research Station to get more insight in their conversation work. After that we saw rich birdlife everywhere: Frigate Birds and Boobies (Blue-Footed and Nazca). Sea Lions greeting us everywhere and on the first islands plenty of Marine and Land Iguanas! Santa Fe and Espanola Islands also have a rich marine life: Reef Sharks, Spotted Eagle Rays and Sea Turtles everywhere.

QI - Giant Tortoise

Here's a video that I had planned to upload when the episode was released, but sort of forgot, and then later someone else uploaded it. This one is therefore pretty much identical to at least one other video on YouTube, and the reason then for uploading it is to let subscribers who have missed it or forgotten this wonderful QI moment get a chance to see it. This time the QI panel is talking about how delicious the giant tortoise is, which actually prevented it from getting a scientific name. It's also worth mentioning that it probably is the animal that can get the oldest in the world - one giant tortoise that was looked after by humans became an amazing 255 years old. (The clip is taken from the "Greats" episode on the G series / Series G.) I do not own the rights to the clip.) BBC© 2009

SEYCHELLES: GIANT TORTOISE

by Marco Petruzzelli www.tvreporter.it The Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys hololissa) has been thought to be extinct since the mid-19th century due to overexploitation on the granitic Seychelles islands. Similar giant tortoise species on other Indian Ocean islands such as Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues Island are also extinct. The only species of Indian Ocean giant tortoise to avoid this fate was the Aldabra giant tortoise due to its isolated location and 19th century conservation efforts. This species inhabited islands of the Seychelles group, where it thrived on vegetation on the edges of marshes and streams. By 1840, it had disappeared from the wild and was assumed to be extinct. As a grazing species, it somewhat resembled the Aldabra tortoise with its domed shape. In 1999, some Seychelles island tortoises (12 known individuals) were suggested to have survived in captivity. The report of oddly-shaped captive tortoises prompted the Nature Protection Trust of Seychelles to examine the identity of the living tortoises. Examination of museum specimens of the "extinct" Seychelles species by Dr. Justin Gerlach and Laura Canning seemed to show some living tortoises possess characteristics of the extinct species. However, recently published scientific papers on the genetics of the Seychelles and Indian Ocean tortoises provide conflicting results. Some studies suggest only one species was present historically, but others support the presence of three closely related ...

Giant tortoises draw crowds at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange

At 57 years old and weighing in at over 500 pounds, Andy, an Aldabra giant tortoise, is still an adolescent in tortoise years. Giant tortoises can live well over 150 years old and Andy, one of three giant tortoises recently acquired by the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, could put on another 200 pounds in his lifetime. Along with an introverted 34-year-old Aldabra named Patches, and a voracious 14-year-old Galapagos tortoise named Norman, the new giant tortoises are bringing the turtle back at West Orange's Turtle Back Zoo. Among the visitors to the new arrivals yesterday were Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr., and Essex County Freeholder Patricia Sebold. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)
