Walter Gieseking - Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto # 2 LIVE from concert 1940 (1.mv)

Walter Gieseking with the Concertgebouw Orchestra led by Willem Mengelberg plays Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto # 2 LIVE 1940 Of the many dozen recordings of the Second that followed, we have only two by pianists whom Rachmaninoff was known to have admired. Walter Gieseking, Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw - Archipel CD cover The first is a 1940 concert by Walter Gieseking with the Concertgebouw Orchestra led by Willem Mengelberg. Known to his detractors as "Mangleberg," this conductor never let a score stand in the way of his own inclination and here he liberally recasts tempos, phrasing and dynamics to produce a hugely dramatic and deeply personal reading that sidesteps much of the work's inherent subtlety to drive home the structure in a schematic but undeniably effective way (ie: volume and tempo increase for climaxes). Unfortunately, we have no other Gieseking Rachmaninoff recordings (other than a Mengelberg/Concertgebouw concert of the Third Concerto) for comparison, so it's unclear whether this reflects his own approach or accommodation to a strong-willed conductor. Although he adds a bravura chord to the end of the third-movement cadenza, little of his trademark poetry (nor Mengelberg's characteristic orchestral coloration) is evident. Indeed, it's hard to reconcile his heated display with the sensitive artist we know from his renowned Mozart and Debussy recordings. The boldly impassioned performance takes huge risks, and not all of them seem to work, but ...

Walter Gieseking plays Scarlatti Sonatas

Sonata in E Major, L. 23 Sonata in E Minor, L. 275 Sonata in D Minor, L. 413 Sonata in D Major, L. 424 Recorded some time during the 1940s As not infrequently with Gieseking, these are played sans repeats. Still, his Scarlatti playing was remarkable enough to inspire the following masterpiece from America's arguably greatest 20th century poet: The mind is an enchanting thing is an enchanted thing like the glaze on a katydid-wing subdivided by sun till the nettings are legion. Like Gieseking playing Scarlatti; like the apteryx-awl as a beak, or the kiwi's rain-shawl of haired feathers, the mind feeling its way as though blind, walks with its eyes on the ground. It has memory's ear that can hear without having to hear. Like the gyroscope's fall, truly unequivocal because trued by regnant certainty, it is a power of strong enchantment. It is like the dove- neck animated by sun; it is memory's eye; it's conscientious inconsistency. It tears off the veil; tears the temptation, the mist the heart wears, from its eyes -- if the heart has a face; it takes apart dejection. It's fire in the dove-neck's iridescence; in the inconsistencies of Scarlatti. Unconfusion submits its confusion to proof; it's not a Herod's oath that cannot change. Marianne Moore (1887-1972)

Walter Gieseking plays Mendelssohn's "Andante e Rondo capriccioso" in E op.14

Recored live on April 18, 1956. This is a kind of miracle from the hands of this great pianist, if only for the stormy closing bars soon after the theme of the Rondo dies poco a poco. Don't know why he omits one of the last four chords, maybe he has choosen or more probably an error, but that kind of error which has greater value than the right notes of so many pianists. It was listening to this that first realized he has been one of the truly great pianists of all times, before I believed him too standard, for example in Mozart, and now his Mozart playing is one of my favourite. That's how hard-headed I am!

Mozart / Walter Gieseking, 1953: Piano Concerto in D minor, K. 466 - Hans Rosabud, Complete

Walter Gieseking (1895-1956) is soloist in this 1953 recording of the Mozart piano concerto in D minor, K. 466. The Philharmonia Orchestra is conducted by the Austrian conductor Hans Rosbaud (1895-1962). Cadenzas in movements 1 and 3 are by Beethoven. From the LP that is shown above, issued in 1956 under the Angel (EMI) label, serial number 35215. Program notes by the late British pianist, music critic, musical administrator and Mozart authority Sir William Frederick Glock (1908-2000) on slipcase. (Glock studied for three years under Artur Schnabel in Berlin, and was chief music critic of "The Observer" from 1934 to 1939.) This work was composed 226 years ago. As with other rare and historically important recordings, I rely principally on images from the media itself for the creation of these videos, so that the listener has no doubts about the authenticity of the performance he/she is hearing. A section of the score appears briefly at 2:38; the LP label, at 3:11, and the front of the jacket, 14:29. (I had uploaded this work in 2010 in 5 separate segments, but YouTube's extension of time limits allows me now to present it in uninterrupted form as the composer intended.) 1. Allegro 2. Romanze (12:43) 3. Rondo (23:42) Note: If you have friends in Germany who are unable to view this video, please direct them to the first set of uploads of this work from last year (via my archive account): www.youtube.com ............................................ Walter Gieseking: Debussy, Suite Bergamasque, No. 3 (Clair de lune)

Clair de lune, the 3rd piece from Claude Debussy's Suite Bergamasque as played by Walter Gieseking. Gieseking recorded this Suite in March 1931 in London and was released on the Columbia Viva-Tonal label (68034-D, matrix no. AX6018). I am playing the record on a restored portable Columbia Viva-Tonal Grafonola 113a gramophone, ca. 1928. What you do not see in the video is where I wipe the record down before and after play with a velvet cloth, and I change the steel needle after every side. I like to use soft and medium tone Bryo-Phonic needles. As this is my first attempt to capture this wonderful machine in video, I must apologize for the poor audio. I hope to upload many more records in the coming months. I hope you enjoy!

Debussy / Walter Gieseking, 1953: Images, Book I - Reflets Dans L'Eau - Angel 35065

In this 1953 recording, Walter Gieseking (1895-1956) performs "Reflets Dans L'Eau" from Debussy's Images, Book I. I created this video from the LP shown above, "Walter Gieseking Plays Debussy - Images - Pour Le Piano - Estampes,"issued in 1953/54 on the Angel label, serial number 36065. (There are five other LPs in this same series, serial numbers 35026, 35066, 35249, 35250 and 35067, all issued on the Angel label) So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of and from the LP and LP jacket in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these. This video opens with an image of Gieseking's hand from the reverse side of the LP jacket and details from the LP label (a full image of which is at 1:31); LP jacket, front, 2:25; LP jacket, reverse, 4:01. Notes on the reverse side of the jacket are by the French critic Emile Vuillermoz (1878-1960), a fellow student of Ravel in Fauré's composition class at the Paris Conservatory. ----------------------------------------------------------------- More Debussy: Debussy / Leonard Bernstein, NYP, May 2, 1960: Prélude à l'après-midi d'un Faune - www.youtube.com Debussy / Pierre Monteux: Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un Faune - 1961 Performance, LSO - www.youtube.com Robert Casadesus, 1955: Estampes - Pagodes: www.youtube.com Robert Casadesus, 1955: Estampes - La Soiree Dans Grenade: www.youtube.com Robert Casadesus, 1955: Estampes - Jardins Sous La Pluie: www ...

Gieseking/Long - Arabesque #2 (Debussy)

Two versions of the same piece. Debussy's Arabesque No. 2. The first is by Marguerite Long (1874-1966) recorded for Columbia around 1931 (a blue wax pressing). The other is by Walter Gieseking (1895-1956), also for Columbia in 1937. See notes for my earlier Gieseking posting. Long was France's most famous pianist of her era. A rather difficult person but who had close relationships with many French composers including Ravel and Faure who dedicated pieces to her. She was well known as a teacher in her later years. Very different performances. Gieseking more powerful with his great articulation; Long more languid but both with that wonderful pre-War Romantic style not looked on favorably today. I also have Gieseking's 1928 Homokord recording of the same piece which is closer in time to Long's but the sound is not good. I believe that another posting on YT uses that 1928 version.

Mendelssohn, Song without Words (Gieseking)

The eight volumes of Songs without Words were written at various points throughout Mendelssohn's life, (two of the volumes being published posthumously). The piano became increasingly popular in Europe during this era, where it became the focal point of many middle-class households. The pieces are within the grasp of pianists of various abilities and this undoubtedly contributed to their popularity. This great popularity has caused many critics to under-rate their musical value. The works were part of the Romantic tradition of writing short lyrical pieces for the piano, although the specific concept of 'Song without Words' was new. Felix's sister Fanny Mendelssohn wrote a number of similar pieces (though not so entitled) and she may have helped inspire the concept according to some music historians. Mendelssohn himself resisted attempts to interpret the Songs too literally, and objected when his friend Souchay sought to put words to them to make them literal songs
