If I Could Change the World...

Global warming.... AIDS.... social justice issues... natural disasters... all topics covered by UPEI's Global Issues 151 students in fall 2008, and all topics that have many histories, many sides, and sometimes solutions that are just too big for one student to take on. But what if a group of students could do something? If I Could Change the World... is a class project about making a difference, one class at a time.

Jeremy Rifkin on global issues and the future of our planet

Sociology: Global Social Problems - Visual Syllabus

Today's global social problems stem from the accumulation of wealth in the hands of very few through means of coercion, forced labor, slavery, human trafficking, war, and violence. Even those social problems for which humankind is not directly responsible, such as natural disasters, are complicated by man-made economic inequalities. When we realize that humanity is of greater value than money, we will free ourselves of the burdens and sorrows of the world's most horrific and persistent social problems. With open hearts, we can liberate ourselves from the false consciousness that betrays our true interconnected nature and, thus, alienates us from ourselves and our fellow humanity. Love will conquer all. Have hope. Change is in our hands!! I am teaching a Global Social Problems course this semester (Spring 2010), and I made this video to introduce my students to the topics we will be covering throughout the semester. I introduce topics by units as they are outlined in my syllabus.

Narco War Next Door: Vanguard

Ruthless drug cartels in Mexico are battling against each other and against the government for control of the drug trade. 2008 was the most violent year in Mexico, with around 6000 drug-related murders. 2009 looks like it could be even worse. And there are fears that Mexico's narco-violence could spread north of the border into the US In this one-hour Vanguard report, Laura Ling travels to the border towns of Juarez and Tijuana, Mexico where drugs gangs are fighting for control of the drug routes into the United States. Ling also goes to the city of Culiacan in Sinaloa State, a region that's known as the birthplace of narco-trafficking in Mexico. Despite the 40000 federal troops that are patrolling cities across Mexico, violence is increasing and the methods of killings are becoming even more brazen and grotesque. Ling speaks with gun dealers in El Paso, Texas and US officials about the illegal smuggling of weapons into Mexico--90% of the weapons seized in Mexico have been traced back to the US She examines the culture of corruption and lack of public trust in a police force that has become known for working with the cartels. Beach of Death: Vanguard

Vanguard correspondents Christof Putzel and Kaj Larsen first ventured to Somalia in the summer of 2006 during a brief period of fragile stability. They discovered that peace reigned in the capital for a few weeks after 15 years of bloody civil war in what the world labeled a failed state. Shortly after they left the country, however, Ethiopian forces backed by US air power invaded Somalia to drive the ruling Islamic Court Union out of the capital, Mogadishu. Somalia plunged back into war. Threatened by renewed violence and devastating poverty, countless Somalis once again fled their homes in search of peace and security. Tens of thousands try to escape in small boats across the dangerous Gulf of Aden.
