Tibetans Create "Direct Line to Wen Jiabao"

In New York Wednesday night, Tibetan activists held an activity meant to bring people's voices to the Chinese premier during his visit to the US They wanted him to hear the kinds of comments that are censored in China. Matt Gnaizda has more. It started September 8. That's when China's state-run People's Daily launched this Internet message board called the Direct Line to Zhongnanhai. It's supposed to allow anyone to send a message or complaint directly to the Chinese leadership—their headquarters being the Zhongnanhai compound in Beijing. [Tenzin Dorjee, Executive Director, Students for a Free Tibet]: "It was meant to be publicized as a platform where anyone can send their messages and complaints and concerns to the Chinese leadership. But at the same time, it also came with 26 different kinds of restrictions—content prohibitions." Prohibitions like: You can't post anything that, quote, "discloses state secrets, subverts state power," or, quote "harms the state's honor or interests." These poorly defined rules could cover almost any negative comment. [Tenzin Dorjee, Executive Director, Students for a Free Tibet]: "It's a hypocritical attempt at putting a good face forward to the world." That's why Students for a Free Tibet organized this event during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to New York this week. [Tenzin Dorjee, Executive Director, Students for a Free Tibet]: "[We're] introducing this thing called 'A Direct Line to Wen Jiabao. What we are saying is the Chinese ...

News Harder to Get Tehran, Iran

In our top story today...continued coverage of the protests in Iran. People took to the streets of Tehran again on Tuesday, and theyre continuing to defy restrictions on reporting the news. Protests continue for a fourth day in the Iranian capital of Tehran. On Monday, hundreds of thousands of supporters of presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi filled the streets. And the BBC reported similar-sized crowds on Tuesday. But its getting harder and harder to get information out of that country. The footage youre seeing here is from Monday, when internet users began passing around a video of a protestor shot and killed by Iranian militia. On Tuesday, Iranian state media reported that seven people have been killed, but so far the details are sketchy about who was killed and by whom—at this point, we cannot even confirm if the state medias numbers are accurate. Foreign media have been effectively banned from going out to report on the pro-Mousavi rallies. Mobile phone usage is restricted, and internet access has been slow. But internet users are nonetheless managing to post videos of the protests. This YouTube video posted June 14 is already widespread, with more than 280000 views. And this YouTube video is among the most recent in Irans citizen journalism. It appears to show thousands of protestors in Tehran on Tuesday, marching together, in peacefulness and solidarity, asking, Where is my vote? Matt Gnaizda, NTD News, reporting from New York.

Empire State Building Lights up for Chinas Communist Regime

Manhattans tallest building is drawing criticism from New Yorkers. Its over a decision to honor the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party's takeover of China by shining red and yellow lights. [Stephanie Rogers, University Student]: A totalitarian dictatorship should not be honored by the Empire State Building tonight. Protestors are red with anger over the Empire State Buildings decision to honor Chinas red revolution. For the past two nights these red and yellow lights—representing the Communist Partys flag—beamed atop Manhattans tallest building. [Tenzin Dorjee, Students for a Free Tibet]: By doing this, its contributing to the legitimacy of the Chinese government, which is something that the Chinese government wants to spend money to buy, because theyre insecure, and they know that people around the world know about the human rights abuses in China. So they want to buy their legitimacy. The Empire State Building has been lit with red before—to celebrate things like World AIDS Day or the American Heart Association—but this is the first time its been lit to honor a communist revolution. Neither the Empire State Building nor the Chinese consulate would return phone calls on Thursday for comment. But Chinese consulate spokesman Gao Wenqi told the Huffington Post that it was "a bilateral decision, reached through a consensus between the building and the Consulate." New Evidence Helps Organ Harvesting Case

ANCHOR: New evidence has come to light that further proves the case that the Chinese Communist Party has been harvesting organs from illegally detained Falun Gong practitioners. A new documentary has unwittingly bolstered the case championed by human rights lawyers David Kilgour [KILL-gore] and David Matas [MAY-tuss]. Here's that story: NARRATION: Organs are being harvested from live Falun Gong detainees in Mainland China--this is what David Kilgour—a former Canadian Member of Parliament—and David Matas—a Canadian human rights lawyer—have been saying since 2006. They've been traveling the world with their investigative report in hand, trying to get governments to recognize these atrocities and help put a stop to them. Well, that job just became a little easier--thanks, ironically, to the Chinese Communist Party. As a key part of their investigation into the organ harvesting allegations, Kilgour and Matas paid a research team to call Chinese hospitals pretending to be searching for an organ. One of these callers talked to a Dr. Lu Guoping. Dr. Lu said that he had traveled to prisons to select Falun Gong detainees who would be killed for their organs, and that his hospital used these organs. But recently, Dr. Lu was interviewed as part of a documentary film by Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV. In the documentary, Dr. Lu acknowledges that it was he who spoke with this investigator over the phone—but he says his words were changed in the transcript, and that he never admitted to ...

Inside Job - Documentary

Inside Job is the newest documentary from Charles Ferguson, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind No End in Sight, a documentary that pondered the long-term impact of the US invasion of Iraq. With Inside Job, Ferguson once again performs a much needed public service, piercing the veils of mass media and politics in order to offer a comprehensive and accessible look at the root causes behind the 2008 global economic crisis. Politics were raging back in 2008, but no matter what side of that line you stood on, all Americans (and many citizens of the world beyond our borders) were gripped by fear as the American economy (and thereafter the global economy) ground to a halt with the collapse of AIG, one the largest insurance corporations in America. The crisis began when (and I'm delivering a very simplified version of this) AIG's credit ratings were discovered to be worth far less than many within the financial services industry had speculated and traded on. All of a sudden, the largest insurance corporation in America was being called on to cover the cost of loans and debts it had no money to pay for. This led to one of the cornerstones of the American economy being crippled, trillions in investment losses, and a mystery that no one in a position of power (including America's new president) seemed able to answer -- namely, why did this happen? Well, some two years later as the world is still trying to sift its way out of this latest Wall Street blunder, Charles Ferguson is ...

China's State-Run TV Sued over Propaganda

WONG: A US lawyer representing Falun Gong adherents...filed an appeal this week in a case against China Central Television. Also called CCTV, the network is China's official TV news agency -- controlled in part by the Communist Party's Propaganda Department. The plaintiffs in the case are charging CCTV with aiding and inciting the communist regime's genocide of people who practice Falun Gong. Here's more. ANCHOR PART AFTER STORY: More info about this groundbreaking lawsuit is available from our media partner, The Epoch Times. STORY: Terri Marsh is a lawyer in Washington DC Her clients are a group of Falun Gong adherents currently residing in the US after having been imprisoned and tortured in China because of their spiritual beliefs. Marsh says CCTV's anti-Falun Gong propaganda programs have played a central role in dehumanizing adherents through deliberate misinformation--and CCTV has also helped incite police and prison guards to subject the religious group to a campaign of persecution that relies on prolonged sessions of intense torture. The case argues that this type of hate-propaganda was once used by the Nazis against the Jews...and is now being used by the Chinese regime against Falun Gong. [Terri Marsh, Lawyer]: "This case is about the role of propaganda in campaigns of genocide and ethnic cleansing... The images of the target are always the same, and the message that follows is always the same: 'kill them or they will destroy you.' And what follows is always the ...

China's United Front Infiltrates NY Politics

The Chinese Communist Party is systematically working its way into the Chinese community in New York. And in the upcoming citywide elections, comptroller candidate John Liu appears to part of its plan. Its part of a strategy by the CCPs United Front Work Department. Its a group under the control of the Central Committee—the Communist Partys highest decision-making body. The United Fronts goal? To carry out the political agenda of the CCP outside China. That includes getting overseas Chinese to be unified in buying into pro-CCP viewpoints—and influencing politicians and community organizations. One such organization is the New York Chinese Business Association—or NYCBA. It says on its website that it helped John Liu raise more than 20000 campaign dollars at an event in 2006. The NYCBA has close ties to the Chinese regime. When the current Consul General Peng Keyu took office in 2008, the NYCBA held a welcoming party for him. And the NYCBA chairman arranged for John Liu to visit China in 2007—a trip on which Liu met with a top official in the CCPs United Front Work Department. Another organization in New York tied to both John Liu and the CCP is the Fukien American Association. They held a dinner in June this year where the Chinese Consul General and John Liu were key guests—theyre here and here in this photo from that night. Last year, according to the World Journal, the Fukien American Association had helped Liu raise over $70000 for his campaign. On a recent episode of ...

China's Tuidang Movement Part 3: What the CCP Fears Most

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ me.lt Today, the final installment of our 3-part segment on the Tuidang movement. It's a grassroots Chinese movement that few people in the West even know about--but more than 100 million Chinese people have participated in Tuidang. And it's making China's communist leadership nervous about what that could mean for their future. [Li Fengzhi, Former Intelligence Officer for China's Ministry of State Security]: "Today I stand here, with my back to the embassy that represents China, and solemnly declare that I am severing all ties with the CCP. This is the conclusion I have come to after lengthy and serious consideration, and it is something from the bottom of my heart." Li Fengzhi is a former Chinese intelligence officer. In 2009, he publicly announced his withdrawal from the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP. He's one of millions who've participated in what's called the Tuidang movement. The movement's organizers say there have been more than 100 million participants in total. Unlike most political movements, Tuidang does not call on its participants to donate money or even take specific action—all they ask is that people state their withdrawal from the CCP. The movement's organizers view Tuidang as individuals creating a moral or spiritual separation between themselves and the CCP for their own sake, not for the sake of joining a group or cause. But in a way, Tuidang has become ...

New York City Candidates Linked to Chinese, N Korean Regimes

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com At this rally on the steps of City Hall last week, New York residents are expressing concern. These Chinese and Korean Americans say two New York City political candidates—John Liu and John Choe—have connections with communist regimes. This is John Liu. Hes been a city council member representing New Yorks Flushing area since 2001. This year, hes running for city comptroller—the position that oversees the citys finances, including its 60 billion dollar budget. Spokesman for the Christian Democracy Party of China David Lu says John Liu appears to be cultivating a relationship with the Chinese consulate. [David Lu, Spokesman, Christian Democracy Party of China] We, Chinese communities, where John Liu lives, know him better, who this person is. Besides the lies of the sweatshops exposed by the Daily News, he has some other proven records of his ties with the Chinese communist government. In 2003, when the Chinese military launched its first manned spacecraft, Shenzhou 5, Liu proposed a city proclamation in support. When China launched Shenzhou 6, Liu went directly to the Chinese consulate on October 17, 2005 to personally issue the proclamation in this photo. Liu also has connections with the Fukien American Association, a group connected with human trading in the 1990s. According to the World Journal, the association helped Liu raise $70000 for his 2009 comptroller campaign. [David Lu, Spokesman, Christian Democracy Party of China ...
