History of the gramophone and how works

Bix Beiderbecke 78 record on an old gramophone.

We do not normally play scarce 78 rpm records on acoustic gramophones, but this one is not in very good condition, so it doesn't really matter! 'I'm Wondering Who' was recorded in New York in 1927 by a band which is usually known, appropriately, as the 'New Yorkers', which was under the leadership of Adrian Rollini. Several of the musicians were from Jean Goldkette's Orchestra, which had just disbanded. Rollini took his band into a night club called the 'New Yorker', but it folded after a couple of weeks or so. In the band were Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer, who then went on to join Paul Whiteman. But as Trumbauer already had a recording contract with OKeh, these musicians made a couple of sessions for OKeh. Whose band it actually was is still unclear (at least to me!), but the two sides made on 30th September 1927, this one and 'Just An Hour Of Love' were issued on OKeh under the name of Benny Meroff and his Orchestra. Meroff was a genuine bandleader; how or why his name was 'borrowed' is not known to me. However, when the sides were issued in the UK, they were labelled as 'Frank Trumbauer and his Augmented Orchestra', as you can see from the label. This 78 is elusive in the UK, as I believe the OKeh is in the USA The machine on which the disc is played is a cheap, anonymous 'hornless' table top gramophone. They don't usually sound very good; but I like them for some reason, and currently own three examples. I recently cleaned and oiled the motor of this machine ...

iAcoustic : Rebirth of Antique Gramophone

Consisting of a real metal horn and a wood base, the design of iAcoustic, an acoustic amplifier, is simple and clear, but the quality of its amplified sound brings somewhat different experience from ordinary speaker sound. iAcoustic remarkably boosts the audio output from the iPhone or iPod Touch built-in speaker up to about 60 decibels without using any external power sources. While passing through its wind instrument type horn and solid wood base, the audio source is transformed into warm, rich and resonant sound. iPhone/iPod touch can be charged while you listen if a charge/sync cable is fed into the path-through slot on the wood base. iAcoustic is compatible with all iPhone versions and iPod Touch and works with most additional cases and bumpers. www.abitedesign.com *iPhone and iPod are registered trademarks of Apple Inc.

DRAMA - dj set - THE GRAMOPHONE SELECTION

www.myspace.com Drama aka Marco Monfardini has founded with Mirco Magnani the independent label Suite inc./Suiteque/Suitevision in the 90's. Marco has been working on the project Minox since the 80's and he has collaborated with Steven Brown and Blaine Reininger of Tuxedomoon and most recently with Murcof, Nobukazu Takemura, Lydia Lunch and The Gentle People. He has produced with Minox some Suite inc./Suiteque releases (MissQLee, Enfantronique, Dubital, Krisma, etc.). He has also given life to the projects 4D killer and Technophonic Chamber Orchestra with Mirco and recently Schnitt with the german dj Fräulein Amelie. Drama started his project in 2000 with "The gramophone selection" a dj set completed with gramophones, evoking an early twentieth century atmosphere, a sound based on current club culture, mixed with voices from historical memory, Salvador Dali, Antonin Artuad, Jean Cocteau, and spoken words with over-lapping and downbeat rhythms, creates an expressionist mixture which is given Brechtian treatment, a futuristic fusion.

Gramophone spring removal & installation*See Description

This is a video showing the main spring of a gramophone being removed from & replaced into the spring barrel. The object of this video is to show people who may want to attempt maintainence or repairs on their own mechanical gramophone or phonograph, but are unsure of what they'd expect to find in the barrel, and the proceedure (I use) to remove & replace a main spring. Bare in mind, that the larger the barrel size, the larger & stronger the spring inside will be. The spring shown in this video is a fairly small one, so is easier to control than a longer & wider spring such as those found in Edison machines, or the larger HMV/ Victor Victrola motors. As you can see, it's not a job for anyone who doesn't like to get their hands dirty, but for those who wish to attempt regreasing a good spring, or replacing a broken spring, my advise it to *PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION!* There is tremendous amounts of force in some of these springs, and they can cause "serious injury" if the spring gets away from you. Gloves are a good idea due to chemicals & substances in the old grease, for those who feel comfortable wearing them. Safety glasses should also be worn. Personally, I like to be able to feel the spring directly, finding I have better control without them. I've been doing it this way since I was 13 yr old & have 30 yrs practice, so it may look a little easier than it actually is. Some people use two pieces of wood with a large V cut into the sides, and use these in a vice to ...

The "holographic" sound produced by these gramophones is impossible to reproduce via You Tube (especially with my tiny camera !) but, when sitting in front of the machine, the impression is given of the artist and instrument being actually in the room with the listener---a unique and spellbinding experience. The horn has a bell mouth diameter of 33 1/2 inches. (85 cm). EMG gramophones were and are generally considered to be the finest acoustic machines ever built. They were hand made in London.

Thilona Sesi - Ahamed Mohideen - Gramophone - Sinhala Buddhist Song

Sri Lanka is blessed with many Muslim singers who sing their heart out of Buddhist songs and this is yet another classic example of such a singer. Not many have been written about Ahamed Mohideen, but his passion in singing shows what he had. This is the gramophone version of the song. Beautiful illustrations of prince Siddhartha and Lord Buddha were provided by Samitha malli who deserves a good applaud!

Homemade Gramophone / Vinyl Record Player (Phonograph)

From www.josepino.com - This is my home-made gramophone using just a plastic cup, a pin and some Lego Mindstorms parts. The pin picks the sound from the vinyl disk and the plastic cup amplifies the sound. A paper cup works fine, a foam cup also works but I didn't like the results. The plastic cup amplifies the high-frequency tones but not the lower-frequencies, so I did put a napkin inside the cup to reduce the higher frequencies. Using softer materials may help to get lower frequencies amplified. Details of this homemade phonograph are posted at www.josepino.com

My favorite Gramophone Record Playing

I bought this gramophone and record in an antiques store in Manchester, England. The gramophone is apparently from about 1920 I am told, but the record is a mystery to me. The song is called In Old Vienna - Fox Trot (Nicholls). Here's the rest of the information found on the record: Jack Hylton and his Orchestra (with vocal refrain) Dance Orchestra (8-705) Speed 78 Cat. No B5530; The Lawrence Wright Music Co London; Record manufactured by The Gramophone Co. Ltd, hayes, Middlesex, England. "His Master's Voice." As none of these companies seem to exist anymore, I assume it is safe to play this wonderful piece here. Isn't it great how digital media can be used to preserve old things, too. The gramophone is a pure windup job without any electrical parts. The needles require replacement pretty much after every song, and I boght a bagfull of them when I got the gramophone. Still, the supply is finite, and the day of the last needle will surely come... but that's when we'll still have this online copy. In case you're wondering about the vegetation in the background, that's not in England. I filmed this record playing in my house in southern New Zealand.

1925 HMV Model 460 "Lumiere" Gramophone playing "Just a Blue Eyed Blonde"

This instrument utilises a large pleated diaphragm for sound reproduction instead of the conventional horn and soundbox as found on most gramophones. The conservative gramophone buying public of the day tended to shy away from this type of system, so consequently sales were low, and HMV withdrew this machine from sale within 12 months, and replaced it with the more conventional horn and soundbox setup renaming it as the model 461.
