Great Blue Heron

Please watch; this is pretty funny. I installed a Great Blue Heron decoy on the edge of my pond when I first stocked it with goldfish. This shows what a wonderful job the decoy does in scaring away herons. NOT! I share all of my goldfish (I am not stupid enough to have Koi) with Herons, Kingfisher's and Osprey. I started with 10 cent feeder fish, and now have thousands of goldfish. The birds, ducks included, keep the fish population under control. Yes, I hate to see one of my foot-long goldfish go down the skinny neck of the Heron (alive!) but that is life with a large pond. I have learned to deal with it.

Great Blue Heron During Sunset At Seaside, Florida

This video was shot with my trusty Sony HDR-SR10 during vacation in Seaside, Florida. The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands. The primary food for Great Blue Heron is small fish, though it is also known to opportunistically feed on a wide range of shrimps, crabs, aquatic insects, rodents, other small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and small birds.] It is generally a solitary feeder. Individuals usually forage while standing in water, but will also feed in fields or drop from the air, or a perch, into water. It feeds in shallow water or at the water's edge during both the night and the day, but especially around dawn and dusk. It uses its long legs to wade through shallow water, and spears with its long, sharp bill.

The deathblow is delivered with a quick thrust of the sharp bill, and the prey is swallowed whole. More info: animals.nationalgeographic.com or en.wikipedia.org

Heron spear big fish, Egret & Great Blue Heron tog Rare view

Rare view, heron spear and swallow prey. Here a wild great blue heron, one of largest bird in US, hunts, strikes, spears, and swallows a live fish whole. Video also shows another rare view, a heron and an egret together in the same tree, overlooking a river. Shows the heron remaining motionless and then hunting and stalking prey. Also shows it in flight. it is quite amazing how it can swallow a fish whole. It takes several sips of water to wash the wrangling, live fish down its throat. The birds seem human-like because with their neck extended, they are the height of some people. The video also shows the difference between a heron and an egret. In the video, both are in the same tree. The Egret is a type of heron, that usually has milky white plumes. The great egret is the world's largest egret. The great blue heron (Ardea herodias) is a wading bird living in North and Central America. It is the largest North American heron with a length up to 54 inches and a wingspan of 71 inches. It can weigh up to 8 lbs. It is a beautiful blue-grey with black flight feathers, and red-brown thighs. The lower neck feathers are long and plume-like. It develops plumes on its lower back during breeding season. It usually forages while standing in water. It may stand in one place for hours, then strike a fish, but it may also drop from the air into the water for a fish. It prefers shallow water and feeds during both day and night, but prefers dawn and dusk. It wades with its long legs and ...

Meanings and Messages: Ability to Stand Alone, Uniqueness, Independence, Call to Balance, Self-Esteem, Boundaries, Dignity, Exploration, Peace, Fluidity. GREAT BLUE HERON is a majestic bird who teaches us the wisdom of standing still, waiting patiently, while what we need comes to us. Allow the dignity of Great Heron to inspire you: practice walking with assurance and deliberation, taking your time and refusing to be hurried. For the two-legged with Blue Heron as a Totem, there will be a desire to establish themselves as a unique and independent Being, often making these souls the revolutionaries that disrupt the status quo of society in order to elicit change and evolution. Although this is a trait with many challenges, when operating from its Highest Vibration, Blue Heron souls teach the rest of us the value and importance of each individual contribution to the Whole.

Watching, simply observing and being is the key to making images of these or any of our wild creatures. Patience & Observation in Nature reveals much about an animal but Kristen finds that it also reveals much about our own Human Nature. What we can learn from being immersed in Nature is an astonishing world into the depths of ourselves. View more images of herons in my fine art galleries online here: kristenwestlake.net

The Great Blue Heron and the Snake that Wouldn't Give Up! - NIMBY

It was lunchtime when my wife called excitedly to me: "There's a Great Blue Heron trying to eat a snake out at the lagoon - and it looks like the snake is wrapped around the heron's neck!" I quickly grabbed the video camera and picked up the action with the heron trying to figure out how to get the snake off its neck and into its gullet! Not for the squeamish or faint of heart ... but part of our NIMBY (Nature In My Back Yard) series of videos!
