Psalm 96:3 Long ago Jesus addressed His disciples as He said, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few" (Matthew 9:37). Never have those words been more true than today. It has been estimated that slightly more than 8 billion people have come into the world since God first created Adam and Eve, and of those, 6 billion-plus are alive today. This means that more people are alive, today, than all who have ever died! It is true: the harvest is plentiful; but it is just as true, the laborers are few. The ratio of Christian workers to the masses is the greatest today of any time in history. Presently there are l38,000 Catholic missionaries in the world, 82000 Protestants, or a total of 220000 missionaries which, of course, covers a very wide spectrum of beliefs and ideologies. This would mean that there is one Protestant missionary for every 54000 people in the world. This is further complicated by the fact that missionaries are not allowed in two thirds of the world, including China, India and in most of the CIS, three of the largest nations in the world. Furthermore, Christian workers tend to mass in areas where the Gospel is already quite well established. On the North American continent today there is one Christian worker for every 1321 people.
