A communications truck was set on fire in central Athens on Tuesday, and youths hurled rocks and fire bombs at riot police, as a huge demonstration against new austerity measures descended into violence. The demonstration was called by unions, alongside a general strike that has brought the country to a standstill. Firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the blazing truck, the second one to be set alight during Tuesday's riots. Tuesday's clashes came at the start of a two-day strike called by unions furious that the new 28 billion euro (40 billion US Dollar) austerity program will slap taxes on minimum wage earners and other struggling Greeks. .RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Shocking and uncensored footage of the Greece riots. See another video too - www.youtube.com Some eurozone countries no longer want Greece in the bloc, Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos has said. He accused the states of "playing with fire", as Greece scrambled to finalise an austerity plan demanded by the EU and IMF in return for a huge bailout. Mr Venizelos promised to clarify the plan before a conference call with eurozone bosses due at 16:00 GMT. Greece needs to convince lenders that it will make enough savings, and that its politicians will enact the changes. Athens is hoping to get a 130bn-euro (£110bn; $170bn) bailout from the EU and IMF. The deal also includes a provision to write off a further 100bn euros of debt owed to banks. Parliament approved a package of austerity measures on Sunday, but eurozone ministers indicated that more detail needed to be given on the cuts. The ministers also insisted that the major Greek political parties committed to implementing the cuts, regardless of who wins a general election scheduled for April. Leaders of the two main parties have now signed letters committing them to enacting the changes. The leader of the conservative New Democracy party, Antonis Samaras, wrote that if his party won in April it would "remain committed to the programme's objectives, targets and key policies". But he said that "policy modifications might be required to guarantee the full programme's implementation". An official told the BBC that 325m ...

Breaking news footage on the Greece rioting... See another video here - www.youtube.com The historic vote paves the way for Greece's European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release $170 billion (€130 billion) in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone — a scenario that would further roil global markets. Lawmakers voted 199-74 in favor of the cutbacks, despite strong dissent among the two main coalition members. A total of 37 lawmakers from the majority Socialists and conservative New Democracy party either voted against the party line, abstained or voted present. Sunday's clashes erupted after more than 100000 protesters marched to the parliament to rally against the drastic cuts, which will ax one in five civil service jobs and slash the minimum wage by more than a fifth. At least 45 businesses were damaged by fire, including several historic buildings, movie theaters, banks and a cafeteria, in the worst riot damage in Athens in years. Fifty police officers were injured and at least 55 protesters were hospitalized. Forty-five suspected rioters were arrested and a further 40 detained. As the vote got under way early Monday, Prime Minister Lucas Papademos urged calm, pointing to the country's dire financial straits. GREECE RIOTS - Athens Burns as people fights aginst Austerity plans. The Greek parliament has approved new harsh austerity legislature needed to secure a 130-billion-euro bailout from the EU and the IMF in efforts to avoid devastating default. This comes amid violent riots against the vote in Athens. The lawmakers voted early Monday in favor of the bill that will cut 15000 public-sector jobs and lower the minimum wage by 20 per cent. Out of 278 MP's, 199 voted in favor of the bill, with many of those who rebelled being expelled from their parties. Before the voting began, Greek PM Lucas Papademos stressed the crucial importance of the measures warning of "uncontrollable economic chaos" if they were not passed. "The social cost of this program is limited in comparison with the economic and social catastrophe that would follow if we did not adopt it," he said in a televised address. More than 100000 protesters marched to the building of parliament at Syntagma Square on Sunday to express their anger at the new harsh austerity bill. Demonstrators have clashed with police, setting buildings ablaze on their way in central Athens. Dozens of police officers were injured and at least 55 protesters were sent to hospital. Police said 150 shops were looted in the capital and 34 buildings were set on fire by enraged mobs. A three-story corner building believed to be a home appliances store was severely damaged by fire. An uncut video of the rioters in Greece attacking the police.... See another video here - www.youtube.com ATHENS (Reuters) - Several thousand Greeks demonstrated on Sunday against punishing austerity measures to reduce the country's debt, on the eve of make-or-break talks in Brussels on a 130-billion-euro ($171 billion) bailout to avert bankruptcy. Greece hopes euro zone finance ministers will sign off on Monday on the rescue package funded by the European Union and International Monetary Fund, Greece's second bailout since 2010. Sceptics, led by Germany, remain wary about Greece's determination to shrink its debt mountain. Yet failure by Athens to service its debts next month would trigger a chaotic default that would send shockwaves through the single currency. Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos flew to Brussels for last-minute preparations as some 3000 demonstrators massed on the capital's central Syntagma square. Riot police shielded the national assembly, braced against a repeat of riots a week ago that saw buildings torched and looted across downtown Athens after a much larger rally involving tens of thousands. "The austerity measures are really hurting pensioners - we can't just sit and take it," said retired state electricity worker Costas Xenakis, 70, whose monthly pension will be hit again by new cuts approved by Papademos' cabinet on Saturday. Very violent footage of the Greece rioting over the austerity measures... Several thousand banner-waving protesters staged rallies in Athens yesterday to protest budget cuts as eurozone ministers prepare to approve a new €130-billion bailout for the debt-crippled nation. Hundreds of police shadowed the latest demonstrations, held a week after Parliament passed new austerity measures that sparked protests in which gangs of rioters torched dozens of buildings in the Greek capital. "Poverty and Hunger Have No Nationality", read one banner carried by demonstrators on Syntagma square outside Parliament. "We Are Greeks, Merkel and Sarkozy Are Freaks" said another, referring to the German and French leaders. As the demonstrators chanted, Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos left for Brussels for talks with officials ahead of today's crucial Eurogroup meeting of eurozone ministers. About 1500 people joined a rally called by Greece's private and public sector unions, while about 2000 gathered for a second protest sponsored by left-wing radical parties to call for an "uprising" against the government. "We will come every day if need be," said Xenia Amaricoulou, a drugstore vendor in her forties. "They up there (pointing to the Parliament) should be aware we are not accepting any measures that would take us further down. Why should we be punished for something that we haven't done? Riot squad units lashed out indiscriminately at marchers outside the Olympion cinema which had been occupied yesterday by groups opposed to the latest round of austerity measures.
