More video of Greek riots, 18 detained, 4 police injured

A communications truck was set on fire in central Athens on Tuesday, and youths hurled rocks and fire bombs at riot police, as a huge demonstration against new austerity measures descended into violence. The demonstration was called by unions, alongside a general strike that has brought the country to a standstill. Firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the blazing truck, the second one to be set alight during Tuesday's riots. Tuesday's clashes came at the start of a two-day strike called by unions furious that the new 28 billion euro (40 billion US Dollar) austerity program will slap taxes on minimum wage earners and other struggling Greeks. .RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

My tribute to Loukanikos the Greek Riot dog.

A constant of the protests in Greece is the Loukanikos the Riot Dog, whose name means "Sausage" in Greek. This dog, who has been sighted at protests since 2008, apparently has no fear of tear gas, loud explosions, crowds, riot police or fire and is known across the world. Loukanikos is apparently the successor to Kanellos, the original Greek Riot Dog who passed away in 2005. It's not clear who exactly owns Loukanikos, how old he is or what attracts him to these apocalyptic street battles between police and protestors. What is certain is that he loves tear gas. And barking at riot police.FAIR USE NOTICE: "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Greece is picking up the pieces from the latest bout of civil unrest, when thousands of angry protestors flooded the streets. Protestors threw stones at police, smashed windows and set fire to property. Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades. Clashes continued overnight. goodnews.ws λουκάνικο σκύλος Riot Dog is a term used to describe either of the three (Kanellos, Louk aka Thodoris, and Loukanikos) literal mascot dogs of the protesters of Athens, Greece. For several years a golden/cinnamon colored dog sporting a blue collar has been seen at nearly every riot/protest whether it be peaceful or malicious. Kanellos; Kanellos (in Greek "Κανέλλος", which means "cinnamon" was the first incarnation of Riot Dog. In Greece he was famous since the 1990s when he appears as a puppy in photographs of a general assembly of students in the occupied National Technical University of Athens, where he based his living for the years to come. He became world famous when he was involved in the 2008 Greek riots.Greek photographers capturing riot footage started to notice the dog when he kept appearing in their negatives.Kanellos died in 2008 of unknown causes, thought to only be old age. Kanellos lived to be quite old but had severe arthritis in his final days, motivating the local college student to donate money to purchase him a "doggy" wheel chair and allowing him to live among them indoors until he passed. Louk; The newer Kanellos look-alike is Thodoris, more commonly called Louk, and is thought to be one of Kanellos' pups. Louk is a light golden colored stray dog, who is up to date on all his shots, hence the blue collar.During his off time he is relaxed and quite mild, though when witnessed during May 2010 Greek riots he can be seen darting through ...

Greece unrest: Athens clashes amid general strike

Greek riot police have fired tear gas and fought running battles with protesters, amid a 48-hour general strike that has paralysed the country. Some protesters hurled petrol bombs and stones at the police, as a march by tens of thousands of people in central Athens turned violent. Many Greeks are furious at the latest round of austerity proposals. EU leaders and global finance chiefs have flown to Germany to discuss the eurozone crisis. French President Nicolas Sarkozy will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel and senior officials from the European Central Bank and IMF. Greece is struggling to reduce a huge government deficit amid fears it may default and set off a crisis, engulfing other eurozone countries like Spain and Italy. The EU and IMF have demanded tough cuts in return for two bailout packages, and their meeting in Frankfurt comes days before high-level EU talks on the crisis. Gas masks The Greek government has so far introduced one round of austerity measures. Continue reading the main story Analysis Gavin Hewitt BBC Europe editor At stake here is not just whether the Greek parliament can get its legislation through. Seeing the vast numbers on the street, the government ministries occupied, the violence, it has to be asked whether Greece can impose these new austerity measures. And if it can't, will the EU and IMF go ahead with the next tranche of bailout money? Without the next 8bn euros ($11bn; £7bn) Greece will soon find itself unable to pay its bills. But ...

GREECE RIOTS - 28.06.2011

But an MP from the country's ruling party has told Sky News he intends to vote against the tough economic programme unless concessions are made. Furthermore, unions say the measures merely slap taxes on minimum wage earners. Greece's finances have spiralled out of control partly due to the country's employment laws. The average retirement age is 61, but millions of workers in the public and private sector retire at 50. This has left Greece with a hefty and ever-increasing pension liability. While paying out generous state pensions, the Greek government has failed to generate incomes to match. Tax evasion is widespread, with only 5000 Greeks admitting to earning wages over 100000 euros (£89000) a year. With self-reported earnings that are rarely challenged and a tax inspection system under pressure from spending cuts, up to £13bn in tax may be lost every year. Meanwhile, governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King has said concerns over Greece defaulting are sufficient enough to have prompted the consideration of contingency plans for the UK banking sector. He also repeated to the Treasury Select Committee that it was unclear how exposed UK banks are to Greece due to a complicated web of loans to other European institutions. There is a danger that regardless of the UK's exposure level, a Greek default would prompt a worldwide tightening of lending from markets to banks that would impact the UK, he added. It's viewed as the country's last chance to stave off default - something that could have ruinous consequences for the Euro. But public opposition has turned violent. Scenes from downtown Athens resemble a warzone as protesters clash with police amid volleys of tear gas. This just in from Greece: "The riots are bad and are in front of our hotel-we are a block and a half from parliament. BUT it is very organized chaos, anarchy made easy.
