A couple of our upcoming summer program participants made this direct address video to Comcast after they decided to de-fund the Reel Grrls' summer apprenticeship program. Comcast's decision came in response to a tweet we posted that referenced Comcast's recent hiring of FCC commissioner Meredith Baker, who voted to approve the NBC/Comcast merger in January. Injury in Broward Roller Derby Grrls Vs. Jacksonville
Freek-a-rella, a Broward County Gold Coast "Grrl," has Lupus, but that very important fact does not stop her! She invited the Southeast Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America to hold a fundraiser at the Ft. Lauderdale showdown, May 1st 2010, against the Jacksonville Roller Girls. We got front row seats angled right of the section dubbed suicide seats (where one brings their own cushions or small beach-like chairs and sits on the floor in front of the actual seating area). It was quite a time watching intimidating women in crazy, skimpy and fun outfits pushing, blocking and causing their opponents to land face flat on the rink floor...essentially taking each other out all while skating at the speed of light. There were a few injuries, but never fear, the paramedics are on hand at all roller derby events. A full bar and some roller derby shopping was available for spectators ranging from families, to teens, to grown couples. BY MICHELINE MARONI

Reel Grrls ran another successful Video Camp this summer in Seattle, WA with 15 girls aged 10-15. They learned camera, audio, lighting, stop-motion animation, editing and Garageband.
