A creepy, anguished memorial to Jayne Mansfield. Martin Phillips is best known for sunnily optimistic songs like "Heavenly Pop Hit," but the New Zealander has always had his dark side. None of his songs are darker than 1988's "16 Heart-Throbs," an absolutely bleak reverie on death and forgiveness. Andrew Todd's carnival organ sounds creepy and sinister, playing a single circular figure obsessively throughout the entire song as the rhythm section of drummer Caroline Easther and bassist Justin Harwood lurches along in a manner that suggests they're going to fall apart at any moment. Phillips' wailing voice and nearly atonal guitar fills make him sound as if he's in the hospital ward the unsparing, ickily graphic lyrics describe, standing vigil at the bedside of the "Jayne with a Y/Why why why?" whose death he's mourning. Mayo Thompson's ultra-compressed production gives the song a claustrophobic, contents-under-pressure vibe that suggests the entire song -- if not Phillips' entire mental and spiritual well-being -- is about to explode. That instead it limps to a resigned close only adds to the song's gut-wrenching emotional impact. "16 Heart-Throbs" is not the least bit fun, but it's a tremendously powerful song.
