GYORGY LIGETI - ATMOSPHERES (Now with sound again!)

GYORGY LIGETI - ATMOSPHERES (1960/1) Gyorgy Sandor Ligeti, Transylvania 1923 - Austria 2006. Gyorgy Ligeti was, along with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis and Pierre Boulez, one of a group of composers that revolutionised postwar music. Perhaps his most notable, certainly his most famous, piece was Atmospheres from 1960. It is the best known of his micropolyphony/soundscape pieces. This work featured, along with Ligeti's Requiem and Lux Aeterna, on the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Gyorgy Cziffra - Liszt "Grand Galop Chromatique"

Pianist: Gyorgy (Georges) Cziffra playing Liszt's "Grand Galop Chromatique," in E-flat major S. 219. I read on someone elses video that this was live from Japan.. thats incorrect. This was filmed on September 25th, 1963 at the "ORTF," (Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française) in Paris. Cziffra was mostly affiliated with Liszt seeing as how he had the immense technical prowess necessary to play such "romps" as this. He was big headed too, hahaha. this piece was composed in 1838, same year as "La Campanella," guess Liszt was feeling -FRISKA- baddum tshh! (bad joke) :/ ps - this piece annoys the HELL out of me!

György Ligeti, Hamburg Concerto

The Hamburg Concerto pits an equal-tempered orchestra and solo horn player against a section of "dis-tempered" natural horns (ie, valveless — the same horns one would find in a Baroque-instrument orchestra). The effect is one of glorious dysfunction that Ligeti amply explores. From 2002

Gyorgy Cziffra plays Liszt's HARMONIES DU SOIR

Gyorgy Cziffra plays the 11th Transcendental Etude in D♭ major, HARMONIES DU SOIR by Franz Liszt. Transcendental Etude No. 11 in D-flat, "Harmonies du Soir" is the eleventh etude of the set of twelve Transcendental Etudes by Franz Liszt. This etude is a study concerning harmonies, broken chords played in quick succession, full octave jumps, chromatic harmonies, chord variations, and performance as a whole. This piece is considered one of the most artistic of the etudes, along with Chasse-neige (12th). As the piece begins, a man is sitting outside, listening to the evening melodies drifting in the air, be it bells from a church nearby or singing in some far-off choir. As he listens to opening melodies he begins to fall asleep, evident in the sprawling, lazy arpeggiated sequences in the piece. After he falls asleep he dreams and his dreams are influenced by the melodies he hears sitting out in the evening, and wanders off into a dreamland where he is surrounded by the euphony of the bells and choirs engulfing him in the night, during the passionate climax of the piece. Soon he begins to wake up and after he wakes he sits again and listens slowly to the melodies drift away. Experiments in tonal ambiguity and 'impressionistic' sonorities mark this as a forward-looking work. Unlike the other etudes, Harmonies du Soir, which is the eleventh Transcendental Etude, was rooted from the seventh Etudes in Twelve Exercises, which was a study in alternating hands. However, the ...

Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) Marosszék Dances Written for piano in 1927, Kodály's Marosszék Dances are also known as an orchestral piece, written three years later. The themes are based on folk-dance music from the district of Marosszék in Transylvania. Kodály stated that "my Marosszék Dances have their roots in a much more remote past, and represent a fairyland that has disappeared." György Sándor (1912-2005), piano Released in 1974. György Ligeti: Portrait (1993) part 1/7

A documentary film directed by Michel Follin about great atheist composer György Ligeti. (Uploaded with pure educational means) "Hungarian-Jewish origin, Ligeti made his career in Hungary until 1956, when he escaped to Vienna, there to be influenced by contact with more experimental Western techniques of composition, notably with work at the electronic studios in Cologne. His music now achieved a wider international reputation, incorporating contemporary techniques and experiment in a musical idiom that has proved both influential and palatable. Opera Ligetis 1977 opera Le grand macabre, set in a land derived from the paintings of Breughel, is an allusive work, drawing on a variety of sources, from Monteverdi to Beethoven and opening with a motor-horn prelude Orchestral Music It was with compositions such as Apparitions in 1959 and Atmosphres in 1961, the latter a 48-part mirror canon, that Ligeti began to win a wider reputation. Other orchestral works that aroused interest included a Chamber Concerto for thirteen instruments, the Cello Concerto and the Concerto for flute, oboe and strings. Lontano, written in 1967, has a place in contemporary repertoire, with Ramifications, for twelve strings and San Francisco Polyphony. He also wrote concertos for piano, for violin and for French horn. Chamber Music In the second of his string quartets, Ligeti made a strong impression, while his Ten Pieces for wind quintet allow a degree of individual virtuosity to the players.
