Fourteen United States AV8B Harrier Jets joined up with the UK aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious ahead of a major joint exercise in the United States. The Harriers, from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Marine Aircraft Group (MAG)14, embarked onboard HMS Illustrious, the UK's and NATO's High Readiness Maritime Strike Carrier, ahead of a US-led Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFX) that was set to take place off the eastern coast of the United States.

Harrier NATO Exercise.
NATO exercise between the Royal Navy and the Spanish Navy (in Spanish, Armada Española) with the Harrier. The aircraft's official name is Matador, although the distinctive large air intakes led to the nickname "Cobra". All of the AV-8Ss were operated by 8 Escuadrilla (8 Squadron), based at Naval Air Station Rota, as were all other Spanish Naval Aviation Squadrons. After the sale of the two TAV-8S aircraft in 1996, US Marine Corps instructors at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, trained the Spanish Harrier pilots. After delivery of the sole TAV-8B of the Spanish Navy in June 2001, Spanish Harrier pilots can receive their training at NAS Rota. But Spanish Harrier pilots in the making still have to travel to the United States as all initial flight training is conducted with the T-34 Mentor and T-45 Goshawk training squadrons of the US Navy. Four EAV-8B Day Attack Harriers continue to operate next to the EAV-8B+ variants with 9 Escuadrilla, although the Spanish Navy is looking into a small upgrade of these aircraft. This upgrade would not give them the AN/APG-65 radar of the EAV-8B+, but would include the F402-RR-408 engine and some of the targeting systems.

RAF Unimog 406 Aircraft Tractor Moving Harrier Jet.
The full tile of this vehicle is Tractor, Wheeled, Industrial, Aircraft Support, Multi-purpose, Unimog 406-120. A small number were purchased to tow Harrier aircraft both at RAF Gutersloh which was their main base in Germany and also for their wartime role when the Harriers would have been dispersed into the German forests. Most were painted olive green with a black disruptive camouflage pattern, but some were left plain green. They were used in dispersal sites along with Range Rover TACR 2s; several types of 3/4ton Land Rover including Ambulances, hard top, and soft top; and various types of Bedford MK/MJ trucks, including GS truck, Workshop truck and Refueller. RAF Gutersloh was also the main base in Germany for Puma and Chinook helicopters, which were used in support of the Harriers. As a result, the Unimogs were also used to tow these helicopters. Unimogs were also deployed to Belize in support of Harriers, and also to the Falkland Islands at RAF Mount Pleasant where they were used to tow Phantom jet fighters. During the Cold War period in the 1970s and 1980s, the RAF Harriers operated off base from sites hidden along the fringes of the forests of West Germany, ready to launch against an enemy as a reconnaissance or attack force, returning to cover to prepare for the next sortie. Its ability to take off and land independently of fixed runways, made the Harrier a force-multiplier to be reckoned with. This video shows the harrier force on exercise in West Germany, you can see the mobile harrier airfields being built by Royal Engineers from 10 field squadron, using thousands of aluminium planks, the guys who laid the planks called it kicking tin, when the exercise was over it all had to be picked up and each plank checked for damage. Building and clearing the sites did get boring at times, but it was all worth it to see the Harriers on exercise in the fields and forests of West Germany. Sometimes if tin kickers got lucky they got to fly in the two seater T-bird Harriers. The RAF guys called this passenger ride in a Harrier a JOLLY. www.sg-etuo.de

My tribute to the Harrier. I have used a mixture of footage from air shows and war time. The Harrier's beginning's were with the Hawker p.1127 . Design began in 1957 by Sir Sydney Camm , Ralph Hooper and Sir Stanley Hooker of the Bristol engine company. The first vertical take-off was on 21 October 1960. The P.1127 developed into the Hawker Siddeley Kestrel FGA.1. The Kestrel was strictly an evaluation aircraft, and only nine were produced, the first flying on march 7 1964. At the time of the development of the P.1127, Hawker had started on a design for a supersonic version, the Hawker p1154. After this was cancelled in 1965, the RAF began looking at a simple upgrade of the Kestrel as the P.1127(RAF). In mid-1966, the P.1127(RAF) was ordered by the RAF as the Harrier GR.1, with the first preproduction aircraft flying the following year.The Harrier GR.3 featured improved sensors countermeasures and a further upgraded Pegasus Mk 103. This model saw a lot service in the Falklands war mainly for ground attack. Also the BAE Sea Harrier FRS.1 which was mainly for fleet air defence. The Sea Harrier, developed from the GR.3, was important to the naval activities. Twenty Sea Harriers were operated from the carriers HMS Hermes and Invincible . Although they destroyed 21 argentine aircraft in air combat with no loss there were not enough of them to establish complete air superiority and prevent Argentine attacks and daily flights of C-130 Hercules transports to the islands. These are the last ever Harriers to launch from the Ark Royal, as she heads from Newcastle to Hamburg for the ship's company's last ever foreign trip and 'run ashore'. Both the Harrier and Ark Royal are being de-commissioned (scrapped). A big thanks goes to the incompetent, self-conceited, greedy bankers and part of the coalition government's 'frugal' answer to appease them and plug the infamous 'black hole' of the recession. New Stryker F27Q doing Inverted Harrier and Flat Spins

StrykerFest is coming soon too!!! 4 of us picked up the new Stryker from our buddy's shop today and what a riot. 3 of us took off in the video for our maiden there, and after are some clips from other flights today too. At the end of the video, watch for some aerial shots of Green Lantern from above. Got the Hero strapped to the bottom of my Habu and SuperDave flying it. Really windy but we got a couple good shots to see how it'd work, and of him doing some rolls. First impressions of the Stryker F27Q. Lots of great improvements, like more re-inforcements, the fibreglass strips in the wings. The control horns for the elevons more in the middle of the surface, the rudders of course, but I had them first on a Stryker LOL The nose wheel is an ok upgrade I guess, but it rolls a lot longer with it haha. We were not super impressed with the 480 outrunner motor, that will have to be upgraded, or at least run it on a 4cell, which I tried today, and worked pretty good. The ESC will have to be a larger one to take the 60amps it was pushing on the 4cell. At that amperage, it was pushing out almost 900watts. Not bad!! Back to the power, the 2800kv motor and 6X6 prop just didn't go as fast as we thought it would. Damn the plane is heavy too, 2lbs. 1/2 pound heavier than the original. It basically goes only about 5-10mph faster than the original stock Stryker, and we usually have that beat with a Mega <b>...</b>

Between 20 and 21 September 2009 members of the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS - Komitee gegen den Vogelmord) and Birdlife Malta found the remains of 192 protected birds which were hidden under stones and rubbish in the Mizieb Woodland in Malta. These consist of 35 Night Herons, 3 unidentified Heron, 38 Marsh Harriers, 33 Falcons, 18 Honey Buzzards and 49 skeletons of raptors (as yet unidentified), 3 Kestrels, 1 Nightingale, 1 Golden Oriole, 4 racing pigeons, 3 Hoopoes and 4 Nightjar.

Wave goodbye to the Harrier, the last all British front line fighter, after it's 41 years of distinguished service. Taken on 28/10/2010 shortly after their early retirement was announced. Featuring nos. 77A,14A,94,45A,19,69A,57A,08. ps. All of these aircraft were retired on 15/12/2010 and have been broken up and sold to the USMC for spare parts except for ZD433 45A (note the Afghanistan mission markings on the left side) which has gone to the FAA museum at Yeovilton. Other aircraft saved (not shown here) are,ZG477at Cosford, ZD319 at Wittering and ZD461/51A at the IWM. Saturday 24 July 2010 at Bandar Technology Kajang HLH4 held a 'Preamble" to treat our Guests from Indonesia, Sabah, and Sarawak who had checked in two days earlier. No run, just drink, eat, drink and party at our GM, King Kong's place. Many participating GMs also accepted our invitation to party and count down to our Sweet 17 celebration. The next day was a great and beautiful day as the hashers arrived at the runsite. Everything went smoothly, the 5 buses ferrying some 200 hashers for the B to A 'Long' run left on time. The Long Run FRB was out in an hour and a half. The old farts, the walkers and the medium distance runners were also 'flagged' off on time. However, its never called a Hash event IF everything goes as planned. The pre-run lunch was delayed by about 10 mins. Some food stations had long queues for second helpings. More crates had to be carried from the beer truck as the quota run out. The headache for some in deciding which of the 2 freebie Ts to wear. It was also an occasion to honor one member, the one who co-founded the 1st Hash chapter in Kajang. Iqbal 'Long John Silver' is also to be blamed for the cause of some 9 chapters in Kajang. Now it is time to Thank Thank you to the more than 1500 pre-run registrations. Thank you to the more than 70 Hash chapters participating in our celebrations.
