With a flash of orange and an ear-splitting bang HMS Diamond has proved her fighting mettle by testing her missile system off the Outer Hebrides. The third of the Royal Navy's cutting edge Type-45 destroyers blasted her missile out of the silo at three times the speed of sound, obliterating the jet drone target out of the sky. The successful firing of the Sea Viper system means that HMS Diamond is now ready to take her place as a fully operational warship, capable of deploying anywhere across the world.

The latest of the Royal Navy's powerful new Type 45 destroyers has been formally welcomed into the fleet at a ceremony in Portsmouth. HMS Dragon is the fourth of six Type 45 destroyers being built for the Navy. Hundreds of guests including families of the 190 crew of HMS Dragon attended the colourful "Christening" ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base. The hour-long ceremony was rounded off in traditional Royal Navy fashion with the cutting of a commissioning cake. Performing that honour was Commanding Officer Darren Houston's wife, Liesl, and 18 year old Engineering Technician Mark Soldiew - the youngest member of the ship's company. All six of the new Type 45s are due to be in service by the middle of the decade.

The Royal Navy is to send one of its most powerful warships to the Falkland Islands as tensions rise with Argentina over the disputed territory. HMS Dauntless will deploy to the South Atlantic in late March, almost 30 years to the day that a naval task force left Portsmouth to reclaim the Falklands after Argentina invaded in 1982. Portsmouth-based Dauntless will be the first of the navy's new £1bn Type 45 destroyers to go to the area. She is armed with supersonic Sea Viper missiles and an air defence system, which can take out targets the size of a cricket ball moving at three times the speed of sound.

HMS Barham Explodes and Sinks, 1941 [Full Resolution]. Dramatic Newsreel footage captured the sinking of the Queen Elizabeth Battleship. A salvo of torpedoes from a German submarine struck from close range on HMS Barham on November 25, 1941 in the Mediterranean. Within four minutes, the battleship had listed over to Port and the ships magazines had exploded, sinking the battleship and killing 863 men. The terrifying explosion was caught on film by Pathe cameraman John Turner who was on an adjacent ship. HMS Liverpool has returned to her home city to take a farewell bow in her spiritual home after three decades of service. The Type 42 destroyer sailed into the Mersey today (Wednesday) at the start of a six-day visit. She was laid down at Cammell Laird's in 1978 and launched from the famous Birkenhead yard in 1980 before entering service in 1982 - two weeks after the Falklands Conflict ended. The ship has sailed the world for the Royal Navy in peace time and conflict ever since. Most recently, off Libya, she became the first Royal Navy ship to be fired upon for 30 years during her seven month deployment to the area. Described as a "thoroughly proud Merseyside lass" by the Navy, she will open her gangway for the final time to the UK public as she comes to the natural end of her working life in the navy later this year. HMS Liverpool is due to berth alongside at the Cruise Liner Terminal this morning, marking the beginning of a busy, celebratory programme. As well as holding a reception for invited guests during her stay, the ship's company is also looking forward to hosting some 20 groups, schools, colleges and organisations on board. Tomorrow will see the crew take to the streets of Liverpool to exercise their Freedom of the City for the last time. HMS Liverpool was awarded this honour in 1982 and has exercised this ancient tradition on numerous occasions during her close affiliation with this great maritime city.
