Derrick Rose Cries During Most Valuable Player Speech MVP 2011
Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls is the winner of the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the 2010-11 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Award, the NBA announced today. Rose, who does not turn 23 until Oct. 4, becomes the league's youngest MVP, a distinction previously held by Wes Unseld, who earned the honor in 1968-69 as a 23-year-old. Rose totaled 1182 points including 113 first-place votes, from a panel of 120 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada as well as an NBA MVP fan vote. For the second consecutive season, the NBA and Kia Motors America gave fans the opportunity to submit their votes by ranking their top five choices through a dedicated Web page on NBA.com. The fan vote counted as one vote and was compiled with the 120 media votes to determine the winner. Players were awarded 10 points for each first-place vote, seven points for each second-place vote, five for third, three for fourth and one for each fifth-place vote received. May you be blessed in its hearing. Andrew Murray - (1828-1917), South-African Dutch Reformed leader, author of devotional writings Murray was Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Murray became a noted missionary leader. His father was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, and his mother had connections with both French Huguenots and German Lutherans. This background to some extent explains his ecumenical spirit. He was educated at Aberdeen University, Scotland, and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After ordination in 1848 he served pastorates at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. He helped to found what are now the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship. He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. A Lesson in Humility: Humility 101 [John Candy in Splash, 1984]
This is a classic slapstick scene by the late-great John Candy. This scene was done before CGI was commonplace. John actually hit the ball, and it returned to hit him, smack-dab in the forehead. I always wondered how many takes it took before they got the shot, because, you'll notice, it's all done in one take, not some cheap two-shot (using two different camera angles). In 1985, I had the opportunity to ask John about it and his reply was that the director presumed it would take numerous shots before they could get it right. They booked a whole day to get the right shot for that scene. Amazingly, they got it perfect on the third take! (Dedicated to my nephew, Richard)

Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre - Humility in the Light of the Creator (Alternate) [Humility in the Light of the Creator] 1969 Multi-reedist Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre is one of the founding members of Chicago's AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). McIntyre has the ability to not only play "free jazz" but he also spent many years playing rhythm & blues with musicians including JB Hutto and Little Milton. It was his blues roots mixed with avant-garde technique that shaped the sound of McIntyre's tenor playing. McIntyre was born in Clarkville, AR, but his family moved to Chicago when he was very young. Music was an intergral part of his upbringing; his parents insisted he play an instrument. He started on drums at age seven and switched to saxophone shortly after. Upon high school graduation McIntyre attended the Chicago College of Music. Instead of copying the strict hard bop tenor sound prominent at the time, he developed his own musical concept based on freedom instead of molded restriction. Luckily McIntyre hooked up with like-minded musicians in bassist Malachi Favors and multi-reedist Roscoe Mitchell. In the early '60s the first AACM configuration was formed. Originally called the Experimental Band, this community-based movement was mentored by pianist Muhal Richard Abrams.
