The Hammond Novachord - Introduction

Introduction of The Hammond Novachord at the New York World's Fair 1939 - 1940. THE NEW WORLD ENSEMBLE. The story of the New World Ensemble revolves around three pioneers; Henry Ford, the sponsor; Laurens Hammond, the inventor; and Ferde Grofe, the director. On April 30 1939, upon the opening of the World's Fair in New York the world heard its first electric orchestra. It was the premiere of the New World Ensemble then newly formed especially for the Ford Exposition. The same group, playing a Hammond Organ and four Novachords, led by Ferde Grofe, again appeared this year in daily concerts in the Garden Court at the Ford Exposition. When plans were being laid for the Ford Exposition at the New York Fair, Mr. Hammond told Mr. Ford of his latest invention, an entirely new medium for musical expression - an instrument that could produce the tonal effects of many orchestral instruments. The new Novachord was auditioned by Ford executives and the idea for the New World Ensemble was born. Mr. Ford saw that a combination of Novachords and a Hammond Organ could play whole symphonies. The next problem was to find a conductor - a man with the ability to uncover all the resources of the new instrument and to score music for it, a man to train and direct players to produce music up to the high Ford standards. Ferde Grofe admirably filled these qualifications and was enthusiastic over the possibilities of the unusual ensemble. He, too. owned one of the first Hammond Organs and <b>...</b>

Novachord samples

This is a segued montage of samples from the Hammond Novachord #346. The first section is raw Novachord presented in a style appropriate to the era ... eerie stuff reminiscent of early sci-fi films. This moves into a section of Novachord sounds sequenced from an Akai MPC5000 in the style of the 'Berlin' school of electronica (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, etc.) dissolving into a filtered drone using timbral sweeps modelled on the Novachord's 'Resonators' (which are switched but I can take liberties and make the transition variable and smooth). 100% Novachord taken from the sample set available at www.hollowsun.com and http

Novachord - Steampunk Polysynth

I'm a huge fan of Steampunk ... marrying old Victorian and early 20th century technology with the modern... or adapting modern technology into 'Jules Verne' styling of copper, brass, bakelite and wood ... and it occurred to me that the 1939 Hammond Novachord is the original Steampunk synth - a polyphonic synthesiser capable of making fabulous sounds that are quite ahead of their time but driven by hundreds of valves and capacitors and housed in a glorious wooden case with bakelite knobs and switches and 'Plaskon' keys. So I have put together a montage of Steampunk imagery to accompany a montage of music made entirely using the Novachord samples I am working on. I have segued images found on the net which include some fantastic 'retro-future' computers (some of which are actually fully functional PCs/Macs), Steampunk fashion and some astonishing pictures created by Steampunk artist, Sam Van Olffen (vanolffen.blogspot.com). I hope you enjoy it. More on the Novachord at http

Restauro Novachord Parte 1

In this movie you can see a brief introduction of the Hammond Novachord, its story and the restoration of my instrument. Then, some my improvisations at the keyboard show the sound of the instrument depending on the position of the register knobs.

Grooviest Holiday Lounge Music Yet! 1968's ' Winter In The West ' - Wurlitzer , Hammond Organ

How do you describe a record that was made by a paper company for an imaginary country club? As an electronic organ enthusiast I want to make folks aware that these organs of our past are not jaded relics, but finely crafted musical instruments. The electronic organ manufactures became very competitive in the 1970's and produced some not-so-good instruments, but the flip side of this is that most of their 'top-of-line' from this period are very powerful musical instruments that digital technology can imitate, but never duplicate. Analog electronic instruments have proven their superiority! So what are the organs like from before the 1970's? Better! Yes, overall, their models across the board from the 1960's are all good instruments- Wurlitzer transistorized models introduced in 1964 really took off and for the first time Hammond had a true competitor for the home market. In their haste Hammond quickly fought back with what many consider the 'Holy Grail' of organs- the beautiful Hammond X-66. The X-66 cost nearly $9000! As compared to Wurlitzer's model 4500, for about $4500. I don't understand this, but by 1968 Hammond lowered the cost by half!- for the X-77. As a testimony to the marvel that is the Hammond tone wheel organ, since 1975 when Hammond stopped production of the electromechanical tone wheel design (AKA Hammond B3) there has been a constant effort by the industry to duplicate it with all it's supposed flaws that became the signature sound, by purely electronic <b>...</b>

That Lovely Weekend - organ overdub in studio

This is Jon Butterfield overdubbing our hardware only attempt at recreating the sound of a Hammond "Novachord" (the world's first polyphonic synthesizer dating from 1939-1942 playing an instrumental in the song "That Lovely Weekend" (1941) by Ted & Moira Heath, recorded by Patricia Hammond and the lovely parlour band, with music arranged by Matt Redman and Nick Ball. To achieve this sound we used an ARP solina string section, often considered as THE late 70s disco era string sound and volume pedal which also rather fittingly induced analogue distortion as it was pressed down. "Wishing (Will Make It So)" (Vera Lynn, 1939)

Recorded just a month before the War and shortly after the release of the Irene Dunne-Charles Boyer picture "Love Affair", for which Buddy DeSylva provided both music and lyrics. Vera's joined here by Ambrose and his reliably superb orchestra--Novachord soloist isn't identified. WISHING (WILL MAKE IT SO) Wishing will make it so just keep on wishing and care will go Dreamers tell us dreams come true It's no mistake Wishes are the dreams we dream when we're awake The curtain of night will part If you are certain within your heart So if you wish long enough wish strong enough You will come to know Wishing will make it so Just imagine that you are Back in childhood's day Wishing on the evening star For a load of hay It worked wonders for you then Who knows why or how Though you're older try again It can help you now Wishing will make it so just keep on wishing and care will go Dreamers tell us dreams come true It's no mistake Wishes are the dreams we dream when we're awake The curtain of night will part If you are certain within your heart So if you wish long enough wish strong enough You will come to know Wishing will make it so. ------- More on the Novachord, from Wiki: The Novachord was an early polyphonic synthesizer manufactured by Hammond from 1939 to 1942. Lawrence Welk from 1938

A short clip of the fledgling Lawrence Welk orchestra featuring girl singer Lois Best. Welk opens up with his theme "Bubbles In The Wine," followed by Lois Best singing the Malneck/Loesser song "I Go For That." The band finishes the clip with the old standard "Ain't She Sweet." Welk's band is pure Mickey Mouse sweetness, with three trumpets, one trombone, three reeds who double on saxophone and clarinet, and a rhythm section consisting of a keyboardist who plays piano and Hammond organ, bass, drums, and guitar. Welk himself hauls around his trademark accordion. The reed section playing ensemble passages on clarinet is nice, an effect lost in most swing bands. And check out that vintage Hammond, which looks like a very early B-3. You'll also notice that the drummer plays a drum kit about 10 years behind the times - he has no hi-hat, only bass drum, snare drum, one tom, temple blocks, and two small splash cymbals.
