In 1969 a young Australian, John Rendall and his friend Ace Bourke, bought a small lion cub from Harrods pet department, which was then legal. 'Christian' was kept in the basement of a furniture shop on the Kings Road in Chelsea, the heart of the swinging sixties. Loved by all, the affectionate cub ate in a local restaurant, played in a nearby graveyard, but was growing fast... A chance encounter with Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna led to a new life for Christian. He came to live in a huge enclosure and to sleep in a caravan at their Surrey home. Then in 1971 he was flown to Kenya, his ancestral home, and returned to the wild by lion-man George Adamson. Nine months later in 1972, John and Ace returned to Kora in Kenya. They took possession of Christian some weeks later and moved him into their flat which had a basement under a shop, this was to become the lions home. But all good things must end and keeping a growing lion in the centre of London became untenable. PLEASE READ THIS FIRST I've found a lot of Christian the Lion videos on youtube and I like every single one of them. I decided to make my own because I thought 'Hoppíppolla' by Sigur Rós would be the perfect song for this special story. I hope you like the video and song as much as I do. The Story: In 1969, John Rendall and Ace Berg saw a lion cub for sale in Harrods. Cramped and lonely in a small cage, they decided to bring it home. A local vicar allowed them to exercise the cub, now named Christian, in the curch grounds but he very quickly became too big for their flat. The only thing they could do was try and reintroduce him to Africa, which they managed to do. A year later they wanted to visit him but were told that he was now the head of his own pride, completely wild and would not recognize them anymore. They went anyway. This video shows the beginning of their friendship, the succesful reintroducing to the wild and also their reunion a year later.
