Hellinistic period in Judea and the Hasmonean Revolt

On the death of Alexander the Great (322) his generals divided the empire between them. Ptolemy I seized Egypt and Judea, but his successors lost it to the Seleucids, the rulers of Syria, in 198. At first relations between the Seleucids and the Jews were cordial, but the attempt of Antiochus IV Epiphanes (174--163) to impose Hellenic culture sparked a national rebellion, which ended in the expulsion of the Syrians and the establishment of an independent Jewish kingdom under the Hasmonean dynasty. The Hasmonean kingdom was a conscious attempt to revive the Judah described in the Bible: a Jewish monarchy ruled from Jerusalem and stretching over all the territories once ruled by David and Solomon. In order to carry out this project the Hasmoneans kings forcibly converted to Judaism the one-time Moabites, Edomites, Itureans and Ammonites.

The Rabbis and the Hasmoneans - #18

JewishHistory.org The Duke of Wellington once said that the only greater problem than defeat is victory. By that he meant that the defeated side knows what it has to do in order to regain itself, while the victorious side is always in doubt what to do with its victory. The Hasmoneans win the war, now what happens? How do they create an independent state and ward off the Greeks? What happens is- Simon, who is the surviving Hasmonean brother and ruler of the country, in order to safeguard the country from a new attack by the Greeks, makes an alliance with the Romans. The Romans keep the Greeks out of the country, but they themselves stay in the country. Simon is a righteous person, he has the support of the Sanhedrin and the people. He is the High Priest, and he is also the ruler. The Rabbis always objected to concentration of power- but because of Simons righteousness, they allowed it temporarily, and he did not abuse the power. The Rabbis also objected to the fact that the Hasmoneans forcibly converted the Idumeans. The Idumeans did not convert out of conviction, but rather for primarily political reasons. The Rabbis always opposed conversion for alterior motives. This is based on the Jewish idea that one need not be Jewish in order to have an eternal soul, merit the world to come, etc. Judaism, out of all the monotheistic religions, is the only one which is not exclusive. By contrast, Catholicism inists that the only way one can be saved is through Jesus, and in Islam ...

The Last Hasmonean Kings - #20

JewishHistory.org The Hasmonean Kings were a mix of pious, moral people as well as violent, agressive people. The greatest in terms of power was Alexander Jannaeus (Yannai). He expanded the Jewish state until borders that included much of today's Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon... He served as the High Priest and as the King. The Rabbis objected to this concentration of power in one person, but Alexander did not listen. This instigated a Civil War. At the same time, the Sadducees- a group of Jews who were assimilated and objected the authority of Rabbis and Oral Law. Alexander took the side of the Saduccees as a political counterweight. At the end of his life, however, Alexander realized his mistake and changed paths. He famously said on his deathbed "Be not frightened of the Rabbis, be not frightened of the Sadduccees, but be frightened of the hypocrites who behave in an immoral fashion and want to be rewarded as if they are the most pious people in the world." With the death of Alexander, the rule of Hasmonean Kings comes to an end.
