Hatikvah - The National Anthem Of Israel

"Hatikvah" (Hebrew: הַתִּקְוָה‎‎, HaTiq'vah, lit. ( The Hope) is the national anthem of Israel. The anthem was written by Naphtali Herz Imber, a secular Galician Jew from Zolochiv (today in Lviv Oblast),[1] who moved to the Land of Israel in the early 1880s. The anthem's theme revolves around the nearly 2000-year-old hope of the Jewish people to be a free and sovereign people in the Land of Israel. The text of Hatikvah was written by the Galician Jewish poet Naphtali Herz Imber in Zolochiv in 1878 as a nine-stanza poem named Tikvateynu (lit. "Our Hope"). In this poem Imber puts into words his thoughts and feelings in the wake of the establishment of Petah Tikva, one of the first Jewish settlements in Ottoman Palestine. Published in Imber's first book, Barkai (lit. "Morning Star"), the poem was subsequently adopted as the anthem of Hovevei Zion and later of the Zionist Movement at the First Zionist Congress in 1897. The text was later revised by the settlers of Rishon LeZion, subsequently undergoing a number of other changes. The arrangement by Shmuel Cohen from 1888 is probably based on a Romanian folk song he heard during his childhood in Romania, most likely "Carul cu boi"("The Ox Driven Cart") The melody also somewhat resembles Smetana's symphonic poem "Ma Vlast", which in turn was based on a Swedish version of the Romanian song.

Al Jolson - Hatikvah

A rare recording of Al Jolson singing the Israeli national anthem, Hatikvah (The Hope). Al Jolson (May 26, 1886 October 23, 1950) was an American singer, comedian, and actor. According to PBS, he is considered the "first openly Jewish man to become an entertainment star in America". His career lasted from 1911 until his death in 1950, during which time he was commonly dubbed "the world's greatest entertainer. His performing style was brash and extroverted, and he popularized a large number of songs that benefited from his "shamelessly sentimental, melodramatic approach". Numerous well-known singers were influenced by his music, including Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Bob Dylan, who once referred to him as "somebody whose life I can feel". In the 1930s he was America's most famous and highest paid entertainer. Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. Yet he's best remembered today for his leading role in the first (full length) talking movie ever made, The Jazz Singer, released in 1927. He starred in a series of successful musical films throughout the 1930s. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with the 1946 Oscar-winning biographical film, The Jolson Story. Larry Parks played Jolson with the songs dubbed in with Jolsons real voice. A sequel, Jolson Sings Again, was released in 1949, and was nominated for three Oscars. הַתִּקְוָה - Hatikvah, "The Hope", arranged and performed by Mehmet Okonsar, piano

This is my own transcription of the Hatikvah, I performed and recorded. I hope you'll enjoy. Please comment. Thank you. [from Wikipedia] Hatikvah (Hebrew: הַתִּקְוָה‎‎, Hatiq'vah, lit. The Hope) is the national anthem of Israel. The anthem was written by Naphtali Herz Imber, a secular Galician Jew from Zolochiv (today in Lviv Oblast),[1] who moved to the Land of Israel in the early 1880s. The anthem's theme revolves around the nearly 2000-year-old hope of the Jewish people to be a free and sovereign people in the Land of Israel, a national dream that would eventually be realized with the founding of the modern State of Israel in 1948. The text was later revised by the settlers of Rishon LeZion, subsequently undergoing a number of other changes. The melody, from a common European folk tune, La Mantovana, was arranged by Samuel Cohen, an immigrant from Bessarabia. HATIKVAH

The melody for Hatikva is based on "La Mantovana," a 17th century Italian song. Its earliest known appearance in print was in early 17th-century Italy as "Ballo di Mantova." This melody gained wide currency in Renaissance Europe, being recorded variously as the Spanish hymn "Virgen de la Cueva" ("Virgin of the Cave"), the Yiddish folk song "Prayer for the Dew," the Polish folk song "Pod Krakowem," and as the Ukrainian "Kateryna Kucheryava." This melody had been famously used by Bedřich Smetana in his symphonic poem "Má vlast" as "Die Moldau." The modern adaptation of the music for Hatikvah is assumed to be composed by Samuel Cohen in 1888. He himself recalled many years later that he had adapted the melody from a Moldavian folk-song, possibly "Carul cu boi" ("Carriage with Oxen") which shares many structural elements with Hatikva. Hatikvah is written in a minor key, which is often perceived as mournful in tone and thus rarely used in national anthems. However, as the title ("The Hope") and the words suggest, the import of the song is uplifting and optimistic in spirit.

However, it did not officially become the national anthem until November 2004, when it was sanctioned by the Knesset in an amendment to the Flag and Coat-of-Arms Law (now renamed the Flag, Coat-of-Arms, and National Anthem Law). In its modern rendering, the official text of the anthem incorporates only the first stanza and refrain of the original poem. The predominant theme in the remaining stanzas is the ...

התקווה Hatikvah - English Version The Israel Anthem

The National Anthem of Israel (TheHope) - The flag of The State of Israel includes two blue stripes on white background with a Shield (Star) of David (in Hebrew: Magen David) in the center. This design was first displayed in Rishon-LeZion in 1885 and was also used at the First Zionist Congress in 1897 (Encyclopaedia Judaica, 1971). It was inspired by the tallit (the prayer shawl with blue stripes worn by Jews during prayer) as a symbol. The Star of David is a common symbol of the People of Israel from Biblical times. The flag was adopted officially on October 28, 1948 (25 Tishre, 5709) by the Speaker of the Provisional Council of State Hatikvah - The National Anthem Of Israel (Lyric) Ko lod Balevav Penimah, Nefesh Yehudi Homiyah.
