Pink's obsession with new wave, glam rock, disco, and post-punk continues as usual, but the strange, surreal recording tricks crowding his earlier work aren't as prevalent. Though the songs are still great--really great, in fact--longtime fans may be a little disheartened by the overall lack of "weirdness." Many of these tracks are simply reworked versions of "classic" songs from the Haunted Graffiti discography, so Before Today may not be much of anything new for some; but the cleaner, more accessible approach will surely blow the minds of some first-timers. The production on this track makes it extremely surreal, coming off like a lost disco jam full of eccentric vocals. The verse is soft and sensual, but Pink kicks down the walls and raises his hands to heaven for the chorus. It's worth clapping along to, I think. Great sounds, melodies, and structure. Originally released in 2002, then rearranged and trimmed and re-released in 2007 on Hall Of Records & Human Ear Music. Ariel Pink is a super duper prolific / eccentric recording artist. The vast majority of his music is supremely lo-fi and blends punk / pop / folk / electronic / disco / funk. Hard to assign a number to what release this is in his discography. CONFUSING MOTHERFUCKER ! Scared Famous, what can I say, it's a hot fucking mess. Very lo-fi. Very hard to sit through. It's quirky as hell, showcases a massive amount restless creativity. It's colorful and bizarre on a molecular level. Everything on here is just swimming in tape fuzz and an overwhelming bizarre vibe. Makes you believe something is wrong with your speaker system. Ok, I got it. The music on here is pop music. That much is for sure.Well written pop music that was left out in the sun too long. Now it's all melted and stringy and sticky. You slip it in / on your music player of choice and all these hallucinatory rainbows come out the speakers and stain the walls, scare your cats and annoy your neighbors. It's not exactly enjoyable, but it is a very unique experience. Is it good ? Sort of, but not really. Is it terrible ? Teetering on the edge of it. Is it original ? Kind of reminds me Ween , Daniel Johnston and Gary Wilson Is it messed up ? Hell yes. Will you like it ? Doubtful. It does have some good moments though. You are bound to like at least one or two songs. 4 / 10

So last month I was cooking back stage at the Big Chill continuing the march of my Food Busking experiment, this time cooking for and interviewing music artists. FB'ing started on the streets of Manchester's Northern Quarter at the beginning of the year and one of its elements is exploring the similarities between music and food. It was Manchester music mogul Tony Wilson who pointed out that there are many similarities between the music and food industries and Food Busking is about revealing and exploring these similarities. I think thats a nice way of saying artists and chefs are mega piss heads.
