Hubble Laser Art on the Hayden Planetarium Sphere

Starting Monday, November 14, a unique type of space show will play outside the Hayden Planetarium. Bright green waves of laser light will ripple across the Hayden Sphere from 5 to 11 pm every evening until Sunday, November 27, to illustrate how the Hubble Space Telescope analyzes distant galaxies, quasars, and other celestial objects in the universe—and to mark the opening of Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration later this month. The laser art, From the Distant Past, was created by German artist Tim Otto Roth in collaboration with astronomer Bob Fosbury, the former head of the Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility. The installation resembles the squiggly line of an electrocardiogram. Behind the luminous pattern is a message: astronomical telescopes produce more than just beautiful pictures of the sky. From the Distant Past is based on data captured by Hubble's spectrometers, advanced instruments that act like prisms, separating light from the cosmos into its constituent colors. This provides a spectrum "fingerprint" of the object being observed, which, once decoded, tells scientists about its temperature, chemical composition, and motion, key indicators in understanding the development and age of the universe. Hubble's spectrometers are especially skilled at hunting for black holes, volumes of space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. "Hubble is all about looking long ago and far away," said Michael Shara, a ...

Il Mondo Della Luna Opera Plays the Hayden Planetarium

Gotham Chamber Opera, in partnership with the American Museum of Natural History and in association with American Repertory Theater, presents Il mondo della luna (The World on the Moon) by Joseph Haydn. For the first time ever, the Hayden Planetarium will be transformed into an intimate opera house. Taking advantage of breakthroughs in laser and light technology, Il mondo della luna will fuse live opera and stargazing using the 180-degree dome with projections courtesy of NASA, immersing the audience in a completely new kind of theatrical event: an out-of-this-world experience for opera lovers, science buffs, and theatergoers alike. This new production is staged by Diane Paulus, director of Hair, which received the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Il mondo della luna will run from January 19 through January 28 at the Hayden Planetarium in the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History. Video is produced/edited by James Sims. For more information visit www.amnh.org

The Solar Neighborhood After WISE

The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer mission is partnering with the American Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium to visualize the Universe that WISE will reveal to us. Using a brown dwarf data simulation provided by WISE team members, this data has been integrated into Hayden's Digital Universe Atlas, a 3-D atlas of the Universe for personal computers, thereby demonstrating what the solar neighborhood might look like once WISE has completed its mission. As WISE data comes in, the Hayden Planetarium will be poised to quickly integrate them into the Atlas, providing a 3-D context of these data relative to the known Universe.

Carter Emmart is the director of Astrovisualization for production and education at the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History. He was one of the original team members of the NASA funded Digital Galaxy Project that helped redefine how a planetarium theater can present science to the public. The newly rebuilt Hayden Planetarium is now used as an immersive display that serves to surround its audiences in an accurately visualized 3D atlas of the Universe. Carter explores the concept of scientific storytelling with immersive data visualization, and how artistic processes can divine meaning and form out of the abstractions of science.
