Hazards of the Ship Wrecking Trade

ANCHOR: The ship wrecking trade is big in Bangladesh, but the workers who turn sea vessels into mountains of scrap metal, are very likely to be ship wrecked themselves. Here is a look at their dangerous livelihood. STORY: These ships, on their final journey to the breakers' yard in Bangladesh, bring with them a deadly cargo. The workers who reduce the huge vessels to piles of scrap metal and recyclable parts face the very real prospect of injury, disease and death. At least 10 people have been killed in the past year. Some of the country's ship breaking workforce of around 30000 in more than 20 yards are now getting safety equipment and training - but it's not universal. [Nader Ali, Ship Yard Labourer]: "I have learned how to cut ships. Now I'm doing the job wearing boots on my feet, gloves on my hands, a helmet on my head and dark glasses over my eyes. It's still a risky job but we do it carefully." In the early days the casualties were mostly from explosions aboard scrapped oil tankers. More recent deaths have been the result of falling steel or falling workers. Health experts say carcinogenic chemicals and acetylene cutting equipment add to the risks of illness. [Akhtar Hossain Chowdhury, Dermatologist]: "These health hazards are mainly physical, mechanical, biological and psychological effects. These effects are mainly dermatitis, burn, and ulcer." Bangladesh's ship breakers produce 1.8 million tonnes of scrap steel a year. The ships come from several sources ...

Though millions of persons may never experience an earthquake, they are very common occurrences on this planet. So today -- somewhere -- an earthquake will occur. It may be so light that only sensitive instruments will perceive its motion; it may shake houses, rattle windows, and displace small objects; or it may be sufficiently strong to cause property damage, death, and injury. It is estimated that about 700 shocks each year have this capability when centered in a populated area. But fortunately, most of these potentially destructive earthquakes center in unpopulated areas far from civilization. Since a major portion of the ...

Hazard Perception Test, Theory test, Driving theory test

How thetest works The hazard perception part is delivered on a computer and you respond by clicking a button on the mouse. You will be presented with a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes, in each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. To achieve a high score you will need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five. Recognition of available clues and perception of danger are skills that are necessary in all drivers and riders, irrespective of the vehicle used. For this reason, the same version of the hazard perception test is used for all categories of test. An example of when to respond As an example, of how to identify and respond to a developing hazard, consider a parked vehicle on the side of the road. When you first see it, it is not doing anything; it is just a parked vehicle. If you were to respond to the vehicle at this point, you would not score any marks, but you would not lose any marks. However, when you get closer to the vehicle, you notice that the car's right hand indicator starts to flash. The indicator would lead you to believe that the driver of the vehicle has an intention of moving away, therefore the hazard is now developing and a response at this point would score marks. The indicator coming on is a sign that the parked vehicle has changed its status from a potential hazard ...

Japan's massive 8.9 earthquakes wakes up and bring to everyone's attention, bringing to every Filipino mind that seems to be, "are we the next nature's victim?" and if that so, "what will happen to us?" Last year report released from CNN containing the documentation of Manila's earthquake vulnerability referring the "Big One" in 'Marikina Valley Fault Line' as 'ready to give in,' according to our local Geologist Mahar Lagmay, at the same time an associate professor at the 'National Institute of Geological Science' at the University of the Philippines (UP). Professor Mahar Lagmay said, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake would be like a '1000-Nagasaki atom bomb explosion below the 'Earth's surface' along the fault line in Marikina Valley. According to 'Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology' Renato Solidum, he warned the residents living close to Marikina fault line to be aware of the tendency that buildings and houses could easily collapse when the ground is shaking, he said in ABS-CBN News report. Explosive evidence: helping better understand natural hazards

At the age of 15, Thor Thordarson was walking on a glowing lava flow when he felt his rubber boots begin to melt. He turned around and ran. Now, as Reader in Volcanology and Natural Hazards at the University of Edinburgh, Dr Thordarson is an expert voice on the science behind the volcanic ash cloud that grounded flights across Europe in the spring of 2010. Dr Thordarson knew from a young age that he wanted to be a scientist, but sensed he would not be satisfied studying physics, chemistry or biology in isolation. "I picked geology for a very simple reason: it would mean more field trips," he says. "The other sciences involved too much lab work, and I wanted to look at nature. I got into geology and found it intriguing. The two main interests in geology that stood out were sedimentology and petrology. Then I realised that with volcanology I could combine the two."
