Hei-Kyung Hong & Aprile Millo sing Turandot "Tanto amor segreto" 2006 LIVE

Program: January 30, 2006 Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Le Villi, Libretto by Ferdinando Fontana Guglielmo: Carlo Guelfi Anna: Aprile Millo Roberto: Franco Farina Narrator: Antoinette LaVecchia Turandot, Act III, Libretto by Giuseppe Adami & Renato Simoni, completion by Luciano Berio Calaf: Franco Farina Ping: Lester Lynch Pang: Richard Cox Pong: Douglas Purcell Turandot: Aprile Millo Liù: Hei-Kyung Hong Timur: Valentin Peitchinoff Ms. Millo exuded towering triumph and dramatic depth as Turandot, with a voice that pierced the air with precision and pathos. Soprano, Hei-Kyung Hong was a bright light of lyricism and love, as she sang her death scene in her effort to thwart the torturers' efforts to extract Calaf's name from her lips. She sang about self-doubt at the worst moment of pain. She was mesmerizing and moving in her arias. The vocal passages for Ping, Pang, Pong, and Timur were all handled expertly. I had hoped for more power and vocal purity from Mr. Farina as Calaf, but he carried the role with confidence and characterization. Ms. Millo and the exceptionally well-rehearsed Chorale were showcased quite effectively, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's brought fire and demonic tones to the stylish event. Review by Dr. Roberta E. Vincenzo Bellini - I Capuletti ed i Montecchi - "Ah! crudel, d'onor ragio" (Jennifer Larmore & Hei-Kyung Hong)

In accordance with my recent upload of Giulietta's lovely romanza from Bellini's treatment (some would say the librettist's mistreatment) of Shakespeare's timeless tale of the lovers from Verona, I decided to also upload the lovers' big duet presented here (as well as Romeo's cavatina). We begin with the central andante (to save time, I had to cut the opening statements of the lovers, as well as the tempo di mezzo, though the main structure is preserved) with each lover separately stating their conflicting feelings in a ravishing cantabile. After a short transition, involving a cadenza for Giulietta and several anguishing phrases for Romeo, the emotional weight is lifted even further with the connection of their lines into a strikingly romantic expression of young love. Though the andante is certainly a perfectly lovely section, I have to admit my special penchant for the stretta that follows it, unusually intense, contrasting the lovers' long, elaborate lines with the slightly martial accompaniment (possibly to further highlight the forced departure of Romeo) leading to one of the best codas to a love duet imaginable. I've decided to upload two contrasting versions: one, the "correct" one, with Romeo sung by a woman, here the very impressive Jennifer Larmore joined, again, by Hei-Kyung Hong's gentle Giulietta; another, the "wrong" one, as performed in the 1960s under a young Claudio Abbado's direction, with Giulietta cast as usual, with a lyric soprano, Margherita ...
Vincenzo Bellini - I Capuleti ed i Montecchi - "Oh! quante volte" (Hei-Kyung Hong)

Giulietta's superb opening romanza is all but too well-known to the audience, though, in this case, the renown is more than justified. Bellini could have easily gone away with another full cavatina (rather logical after the full arias of both Tebaldo and Romeo) but he chooses to go with a much more elegant and, in the context of the situation (Giulietta, as far as I can see from the text, is almost completely dressed for her imminent wedding ceremony and awaits her lover, in almost complete desperation) and the elegiac character of the young woman, a much more plausible solution: a highly romantic aria in basic couplet form, slightly reminiscent of Rossini's take on Shakespeare's Willow Song, though on a smaller (though no less musically rich) scale. Hei-Kyung Hong is a most sympathetic heroine, possessing a clear, sweet voice completely welcome in the aria. Hope you'll enjoy :)!

One aria, several singers: "Ah, fors'è lui" (Part 1)

I decided to make a "singing potpourri" with two of my favourite arias ever: "Ah, fors'è lui" and its following aria, "Sempre libera". Here we have the first part, showing 10 great sopranos (and most of them legendary interpreters of Violetta) in the otherworldly beauty of "Ah, fors'è lui": 1) Renata Tebaldi (1954) 2) Rosanna Carteri (1956) 3) Hei-Kyung Hong (2007) 4) Licia Albanese (1946) 5) Bidu Sayão (1942) 6) Angela Gheorghiu (1994) 7) Natalie Dessay (2007) 8) Edita Gruberova (1993) 9) Joan Sutherland (1979) 10) Renée Fleming (2006) PS: Joan Sutherland got to have two excerpts (one here and other in "Sempre libera") because there are very few recordings of "Ah, fors'è lui" with the two stanzas.
