Jascha Heifetz

Rare footage of Heifetz at the height of his career. This is the introduction to the "Heifetz & Piatigorsky" DVD produced by KULTUR. Most of the Heifetz footage from that DVD (Paganini Caprice, Wieniawski, etc.) have already been posted so this is for those who are really interested in learning more about this great violinist.

Jascha Heifetz plays La Fille Aux Cheveux De Lin (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair), No. 8 of Preludes, Book I, by Debussy. Acompanist: Emanuel Bay I have another video of Heifetz playing this piece, but that's when he was around 70 years old, and it can be found here: www.youtube.com Personally, I think this is the most beautiful and touching performance of Heifetz ever recorded.

Jascha Heifetz: God's Fiddler

Not since Paganini had there been such a magician on the violin. We see never-seen-before vintage filmed performance clips and home movies of Jascha Heifetz and learn that he was the first truly modern violin virtuoso, the man about whom Itzhak Perlman said, "When I spoke with him, I thought, 'I can't believe I'm talking with God'." This film portrays an artist for whom only perfection would do. A musical ‚wunderkind' who went on to set the standards for nearly a century. We get to know through home movies and personal family photos taken from 1903-1987, a prestigious concert artist so well known in popular culture, his name became a shorthand for greatness, for everyone from Jack Benny to The Muppets to Woody Allen. Filmed in Vilna, Lithuania, Saint Petersburg, Russia, and in the Heifetz Studio in Los Angeles, this documentary re-creates a life that spanned the 20th Century, a life that both influenced the period, and was affected by its turbulent times. We hear from all the great violinists of his generation, and from many of his former students who are still alive, that Heifetz was a legendary but mysterious figure whose story embodies the dual nature of artistic genius: the paradox of how a mortal man lives with immortal gifts -- gifts he must honor, but which extract a life long price. Is the man and the artist the same person? What is the price each pays? And who was the man behind the music?

Jascha Heifetz plays Walton Violin Concerto (1/4)

Part 1 William Walton: Violin Concerto in B Minor I. Andante tranquilio Violin: Jascha Heifetz Cond.: William Walton Orch.: Philharmonia Orchestra --- Walton, on the other hand, himself observed that Heifetz seemed to demand such difficulty in the solo part of his concerto as to intimidate other violinists from tackling it. For years, when other soloists did mutter about the works impossible difficulties, Walton would tell them to blame that damned Heifetz.

Jascha Heifetz Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (from They Shall Have Music) - at correct pitch

Jascha Heifetz plays Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso from the 1939 film "They Shall Have Music". (Other versions of this clip exist on youtube but all the ones I could find had the pitch raised almost 1/2 step, and as this is likely among the greatest performances of this piece of all time, I wanted to make a correct version is available!)

Jascha Heifetz - Hebrew Melody (1917)

Jascha Heifetz plays Joseph Achron's 'Hebrew Melody' for Victor in 1917. This was one of Heifetz's earliest commercial recording session. He was only 17(!) years old when he recorded this. The vibrato is just fantastic, and the performance itself is full of emotion. This record was belonged to my great-grandfather, who loved this record so much that he played this over and over again until the record was heavily worn out like this. So the sound quality is really TERRIBLE, but I hope you can understand it. Played on my Numark machine.

Jascha Heifetz - Hora Staccato

twitter.com Jascha Heifetz (Vilnius, Lithuania, February 2, 1901 - December 10, 1987) was one of the greatest violin virtuosos in history, famous for his interpretations of famous melodies by Paganini, Bach and Saint-Saens. Considered by many the finest violinist of the 20th century. Eighty-three of his eighty-six, Jascha Heifetz played the violin, and sixty of his eighty-six, he did it in front of huge audiences worldwide. Since its first orchestrated concert in St. Petersburg on April 30, 1911, he exposed his art to the world through more than two million miles of travel around the globe, numerous appearances on radio and interests in filmmaking. Heifetz, Primrose, Piatigorsky... play Mendelssohn Octet - mvt 1 (part 1)

Octet for Strings in E flat major, Op. 20 by Felix Mendelssohn 1: Allegro Moderato Ma Con Fuoco 2: Andante 3: Scherzo: Allegro Leggierismo 4: Presto Performer: Arnold Belnick (Violin), Jascha Heifetz (Violin), Israel Baker (Violin), Joseph Stepansky (Violin), Gabor Rejto (Cello), Virginia Majewski (Viola), Gregor Piatigorsky (Cello), William Primrose (Viola) Although Heifetz is dominant among his group (as always), this recording is still my favorite. Chamber music requires much balance/harmony, and Heifetz might not be the best in this regard - mostly because few musians could come close to his standard. Yet, without Heifetz and his group's exhilarating recordings, wouldn't our world of music lack something?
