CLB-1 Marines' Fighting Tournament in Helmand Province

3/14/2012 US Marines and Sailors with Combat Logistics Battalion 1 participated in a ground-fighting tournament. The tournament included four weight classes: 164 pounds and below, 165-179 pounds, 180-199 pounds and 200 pounds and above. The tournament was one of several sporting events held by CLB-1 to boost morale and encourage friendly competition between its companies during their seven month deployment to southern Helmand province. The series of intimate interviews with the commanding general of 2nd Marine Division (Forward) highlights the challenges and successes the Marines and sailors of the division made during their tenure as the ground combat element of the Marine Air Ground Task Force and Regional Command (Southwest) during the last year. In the first installment Brig. Gen. Lewis Craparotta discusses the immense responsibility given to the Corps' junior leaders. He highlights the abilities of Lance Cpl. Supporting role for 2 RIFLES in Helmand 29.02.12

Afghan Forces are showing signs of progress as they take on a bigger security role in Helmand Province. The 2 Rifles Brigade Advisory Group based at Camp Gereshk have been working with the Afghan National Army on Operation Saafari a Palang which provides security around Gereshk. The 2 RIFLES soldiers took on just a supporting role as their Afghan counterparts assumed responsibility for planning and controlling the operation as well as taking the lead while on patrol.

A British commander has warned international forces against "rushing for the exit" in Afghanistan. Brigadier Patrick Sanders, commander of 20th Armoured Brigade, told a briefing in London that Afghan security forces are increasingly taking charge across the British area of operations in central Helmand. But he cautioned, the gains that have been made, are not yet irreversible.

A day in the life of some military dogs and their handlers

A team of two Army dog handlers are working together to provide security for British forces in Helmand Province by searching vehicles entering ISAF bases for weapons and explosives. Lance Corporal Sophie Mitchell (27) and Private Kathleen Griffiths (21) are working with search dogs Flake and Trough, and protection dog Vinco at Main Operating Base (MOB) Price providing vital protection to the UK, ISAF and Afghan troops who operate in the Nahr-e Saraj area of Helmand province. While Kathleen keeps watch over the area with protection dog Vinco, a five year old German Shepherd, Sophie controls search dogs Fluke and Trough, both three year old spaniels as they search trucks and cars looking to gain access to the base. Both handlers have been out in Afghanistan for about a month, while the dogs have a much broader range of experience. Fluke came out to Helmand with Sophie, so is still settling in, while Vinco has been in Afghanistan for a year already.

RAW COMBAT: US Marine Sniper shoots Taliban with M110 SASS rifle

US Marines on the first day of Operation Moshtarak. Operation Moshtarak was an offensive in the area that is described as the "poppy-growing belt" of Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan. The combat operations started on February 13, 2010 These marines were dropped off in the center of a town called Marjah, at the time it was one of the most volatile towns in all of Afghanistan. Within minutes, Taliban militants began getting dropped off on motorcycles all around them. They were surrounded but under the rules of engagement, were unable to fire until fired upon. After some intense firefights, these marines set up to ambush the retreating Taliban. A Marine Sniper then engages the Taliban with an M110 SASS(Semi-Automatic Sniper System)
