Christiaan van Hemert with strings - Verano Porteño

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS ARRANGEMENT: hemertacademy@gmail.com Although lately I'm kind of focusing on violin, sometimes I like to dust off the ol' bandoneón and play some tunes! This one is part of "The Four Seasons" by the late and great Astor Piazzolla: "Verano Porteño" - summer in Buenos Aires. The basis for this arrangement is the original quintet arrangement which I transcribed first (if you want to play Piazzolla I recommend never buying scores since they're crap - all the "Piazzolla-magic" is taken out of the commercial scores - just transcribe the music yourself. If you want the sheet music for this arrangement visit the link above!). I then adapted it for this line-up with strings. This is one of the pieces that got me interested in Piazzolla and playing the bandoneón. I imagined playing it one day and I made an attempt at learning it after three years of daily practice on the bandoneón. I discovered quickly that I wasn't ready yet: the difficulty with playing this piece is the endurance one needs. It is very important to learn to preserve energy to be able to explode (both in sound, energy and emotions) when the music asks for it. If you fail to do this you'll be drained within three minutes with nowhere to go and setting yourself up for all kinds of mishaps. This process can only be learned through experience and takes some years to get down properly. I think we did a pretty good job here! Recorded at "Zaantheater" in Zaandam - The ...

4 Strings Feat. Vanessa van Hemert _ Turn It Around - LIVE

Real name: Carlo Resoort (who founded the musical group 4 Strings), born 1 March 1973, is a Dutch DJ, remixer and producer. Resoort originally began working with Jan De Vos when they found a mutual interest in dance music. The two spent all of their free time in the recording studio, and later De Vos went on to become 'DJ 4 Strings' while Resoort headed '4 Strings'. All of his albums as 4 Strings have been released in the US via Ultra Records. 4 Strings currently consists of Resoort (who mostly creates the music) and De Vos (who mostly works on production and arrangement, and performs some songs) and various guest artists on vocals. In 2004, rumors surfaced of singer Vanessa van Hemert leaving the group, due to some newly released 4 Strings songs that did not feature her. Although Resoort originally denied the rumors, by the following year, van Hemert did leave the group. "Sunrise" was the last track van Hemert provided vocals for 4 Strings. Singer: Vanessa van Hemert Lyrics: --- version 1 --- Turn it around, baby Spend more time with me Try to believe you Try to believe you... Turn it around, baby Spend more time with me It's getting insane, I know Let it not be true... Turn it around baby... Turn it around... Man oh man, this is just a crazy, crazy tempo for this piece. It's somewhere near the 300 beats per minute mark. Around 250 things start to get uncomfortable for most improvising musicians, it gets down to: how much did you train your muscle memory, technique and how good are your instincts. Of course, for Stochelo it's just another day at the office; he could easily play this at 350 or higher. I'm slowly starting to get the hang of these superfast tempo's without giving in to the urge of using cheap violinistic tricks like strange sliding trills on the e-string, sliding octaves or runs of loud double stops that you seem to hear all over the place in gypsy jazz nowadays. These tricks have no relation to the harmonies. Audiences seem to love them but they are easy to perform and often used when the soloist is out of ideas or the tempo is too fast. (Also note that Django and/or Stéphane never did these things!!) Stochelo hates these kinds of things in violin players (and guitar-players) so I'm very careful to stay "clean" and swinging. Some days the very fast tempo's can get the better of me but that just means I need to practice, practice, practice!! Stochelo is using his "Stimmer"-pick up to get that electric Django sound. Special kudo's to Nous'che and Nonnie who are again swingin' hard and so steady it's almost scary! I might be playing with the Rosenberg Trio and Bireli Lagrene on the 25th of june in Samois; can't wait, a dream come true! Line-up: solo guitar: Stochelo ...

Christiaan van Hemert with strings - Invierno Porteño

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS ARRANGEMENT: hemertacademy@gmail.com Although lately I'm kind of focusing on violin, sometimes I like to dust off the ol' bandoneón and play some tunes! This one is part of "The Four Seasons" by the late and great Astor Piazzolla: "Invierno Porteño" - winter in Buenos Aires. Invierno Porteño is one of the hardest Piazzolla compositions to perform convincingly. The music goes in unpredictable directions and abruptly changes tempo and mood throughout the piece. To pull this off you need musicians with a deeper knowledge of Piazzolla than can be acquired through just reading scores or listening to a CD (although listening to the maestro himself definitely helps). Recorded at "Zaantheater" in Zaandam - The Netherlands april 21st, 2010 Musicians: Christiaan van Hemert - bandoneón, arrangement Alexandre Kanji - violin Peter Brunt - violin Giles Francis - viola Teije Hylkema - cello Margreet Markerink - piano Daniël Lehmann - double bass

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS ARRANGEMENT: hemertacademy@gmail.com Although lately I'm kind of focusing on violin, sometimes I like to dust off the ol' bandoneón and play some tunes! This one is part of "The Four Seasons" by the late and great Astor Piazzolla: "Primavera Porteña" - spring in Buenos Aires. It is a real struggle to play this piece the way Piazzolla intended it. The explosive energy it requires makes the technical challenges even harder. Some parts can be deemed unplayable; especially the original guitar improvisation which I transcribed and arranged for this ensemble as a unison part for violin and viola (3:45 - 4:00). You can also hear a real bandoneón struggle from 4:33 to 5:01), partly because of the insane tempo I tried to play it in. BUT those parts are still energetic and exhilarating and that's what counts in most of Piazzolla's work. Often forgotten but key to playing Piazzolla: explosiveness and energy! Samois 2010 - Rosenberg Trio & van Hemert (Stockholm)

I found this video while searching for Samois videos on Youtube. The sound is heavily distorted with digital clipping but I tried to salvage what I could by eq-ing. This is a peculiar Django composition called "Stockholm". Stochelo was pretty sure this would be the first time to be played on stage in Samois! Fun fact: with Stochelo you never quite know what you are going to play exactly! He usually decides on the repertoire 15 minutes before going on stage and he seldomly rehearses. If you want to play with the Rosenberg Trio more than once you are supposed to know all the gypsy jazz standards! In this concert I was supposed to play two songs, after deciding on those I left the "dressing tent" to get a drink and when I got back he asked me: "...do you know Stockholm?.." to which I responded "...I think so...". "Let's play it then" Stochelo said and he wrote it down on his list. No turning back now! Fortunately he played the melody with me once backstage and reminded me what to play at the end of the song. Haha, I think it worked out fine! Again: sound is terrible but still a nice memento of the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois-sur-Seine, edition 2010! musicians: solo guitar: Stochelo Rosenberg rhythm guitar: Nous'che Rosenberg bass: Nonnie Rosenberg violin: Christiaan van Hemert This might be a good song to include in the lessons at the "Rosenberg academy" www.rosenbergacademy.com

Rosenberg Trio with Christiaan van Hemert - Nuages

Another beautiful Reinhardt/Grappelli composition. It's not a particularly difficult piece to play on violin but is it challenging to play it with style, in tune and with a pure and velvet-like tone. This is a matter of training your classical chops (in my case one hour a day of Kreutzer etudes, scales and vibrato exercises). Stochelo plays a beautiful flowing solo! I like how at 1:03 Stochelo is looking at Nous'che like: "you never guess what I'm about to do" and he plays harmonics with a look of mischief, haha! I might be playing with the Rosenberg Trio and Bireli Lagrene on the 25th of june in Samois; can't wait, a dream come true!
