Beethoven 'Appassionata', 1st mvt: Dame Myra Hess (1945)

Dame Myra Hess in a lunchtime concert at the National Gallery plays the opening movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in F minor, Op 57. During the war years, and the blitz, Dame Myra Hess organized over a thousand concerts at the National Gallery. The Gallery had removed all their paintings, keeping just one on display each month as thousands of folks (many not regular concert goers) came to hear, be inspired, and maybe gain a little hope by these wartime concerts. Andrew Dickson wrote in his blog at the "Guardian": "the monumental Appassionata - always associated in my mind with a wartime film of Myra Hess at the National Gallery, playing those crashing F minor chords at with a stubborn intensity that takes on all the death and mayhem around."

Rudolf Hess exhumed to deter neo-Nazi pilgrims

The remains of Rudolph Hess, Adolph Hitler's former deputy, have been exhumed from a grave in the small Bavarian town of Wunsiedal. Officials removed the tomb and headstone in order to prevent hoards of neo-Nazi pilgrims descending on the small community. Every year on August 17 hundreds of Nazi sympathisers commemorate the death of Hess. After being exhumed Hess' bones were taken to a crematorium, and his ashes scattered at sea. The action was taken after consultation with his remaining family. ... www.euronews.net

tim lovelace, jake hess, george younce, rex nelon, and willie wynn sings "The Fourth Man"...well...eventually. Bill gave Tim a copy of the song before they taped this so he could learn the (rather fast) verse, Tim obviously didn't have time to learn it.

Harry Hess - Irresistible

Artist: Harry Hess Album: Voices of Rock MMVII Song: Irresistible Year: 2007 Lyrics: I came to your show Cause you never let me go Irresistable Do I need the Joker when I place my bet The stakes are high enough But it`s you who makes me sweat Do you smile when I`m losing? Do you cry if I may win? See this broken hearted gambler With an angel hearted sin Senseless burning down his money And he`s losing all control All of his soul We don`t use any names It`s all part of the game Irresistable You`re the queen of my heart When you`re dealing the cards Irresistable... Irresistable Standing on this crossroad Down to Babylon I see you, touch you, feel you Suddenly you`re gone Do you smile when I`m losing? Do you cry if I may win? See this broken hearted gambler With an angel (guys, what does he sing here?^^`) sin Senseless burning down his money And he`s losing all control All of his soul We don`t use any names It`s all part of the game Irresistable You`re the queen of my heart When you`re dealing the cards Irresistable. Maybe I was a fool Just to play by the rules Irresistable No more aces to play At the end of the day Irresistable You are irresistable ALL RIGHTS BELONGS TO THEIR OWNERS

Dinu Lipatti plays Bach-Hess Chorale "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring", rarer 1947 version

While Lipatti is famous for his performance of the Bach-Hess Chorale "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring", the version widely released on CD is his 1950 recording from Geneva, which was recorded in a small radio studio with a boxy acoustic. This rarer recording from September 24, 1947 was the 6th of 7 attempts that year, and was never released on LP, appearing on CD for the first time in 2000 on the APR label, and now available on the Japanese label Opus Kura. Recorded at EMI's Abbey Road Studios on the same Steinway #299 as Lipatti's other solo recordings from London, this recording has a broader acoustic and one can hear a wider tonal range, a more reverberant bass. There is a significant interpretative difference in the coda, where Lipatti highlights a treble voice from 2:56 to 3:04.
