UNCHAINED MELODY by Al Hibbler 1955

Unchained Melody was released about 1955 and was recorded by a bunch of folks, most of them charting well in the US and England. This 1955 version by Al Hibbler made #3 on the Billboard Charts for that year. Not quite as powerful as the 1965 Righteous Brothers version, but still pretty good and historically significant. Enjoy!
Al Hibbler - "Unchained Melody"

Albert George "Al" Hibbler (August 16, 1915 -- April 24, 2001) was an American baritone vocalist who sang with Duke Ellington's orchestra before becoming a solo artist. His biggest hit was "Unchained Melody" which reached # 3 on the US pop chart in 1955.
Al Hibbler - He (1955)

Charted at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1955 (#13 R&B). This record came on the heels of Hibbler's biggest hit, "Unchained Melody" which charted at #3 on the Hot 100 in April of the same year. Also #10 for the McGuire Sisters. In 1966, the Righteous Brothers charted at #18 with their version. Original Billboard review: "Al Hibbler contributes a warm, sincere warbling job on an effective ballad with a strong sacred theme, similar to "I Believe". Hibbler is a big favorite with deejays, and the disk should stir up some action in the R&B field as well as pop". Written by Jack Richards and Richard Mullan. B-side is "Breeze".
OLD MAN RIVER by Al Hibbler with Duke Ellington Orchestra c 1951

Here is a great version of "Old Man River" performed by Al Hibbler with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. This was recorded from an old 16" radio transcription from 1951, the "STARS ON PARADE" program produced for the US Army and Air Force recruiting service. I'm not sure if this recording was made specifically for this program, but I haven't found another take exactly like this one, so it could be unique to this radio show. Probably won't find it anywhere else, unles recorded from this show. Cool!

AL HIBBLER & HARRY CARNEY BAND - S'POSIN'

Al Hibbler (August 16, 1915 - April 24, 2001) was an American vocalist with several pop hits. He is best known for his million selling recording of "Unchained Melody" (1955). Once described by Duke Ellington as "our major asset", the bandleader was referring to Hibbler's deep-toned, dramatic vocal style, with its heavy vibrato... "You could drive a truck through that vibrato," said one musician... which brought Hibbler and the band considerable popular acclaim.[2] He achieved national prominence in the United States with the Ellington orchestra in the mid 1940s, and went on to build a substantial career, which included continuing involvement with jazz musicians. Harry Howell Carney (April 1, 1910 - October 8, 1974) was a swing baritone saxophonist, clarinetist, and bass clarinetist best known for his 45-year tenure in Duke Ellington's band. Carney started off in Ellington's band playing alto, but soon switched to the baritone. His strong, steady saxophone often serves as the anchor of Duke's music. He also played clarinet and bass clarinet on occasion.Harry Howell Carney was born in 1910 in Boston, Massachusetts. At seventeen he ran off to join Duke Ellington's orchestra starting first on clarinet and eventually moving on to baritone saxophone.Carney was the longest lasting player in Duke Ellington's band. He was always there and on occasions when Ellington was missing he took over as conductor, particularly when Ellington wished to make a stage entrance after the band ...

Al Hibbler - GOOD FOR A LIFETIME (Teddy Randazzo) (1965)

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Satin 401) Out of New York, this ridiculously rare 1965 release is one of Al Hibbler's finest. A large and lushly produced disc that was co-written, arranged and produced by Teddy Randazzo and issued on his own short lived label, Satin Records that was distributed by Roulettes Records. 'Good For A Lifetime' has the style and sound of the recordings that Randazzo was producing for Little Anthony & The Imperials and The Royalettes also during the same time. His typical use of french horns, triplets, crashing cymbols, tinkling percussion, distant female background choir, soaring string section and thundering crescendos are all included in this wonderful production.

Al Hibbler - Never Turn Back (1956)

Charted at #22 on Billboard Hot 100 in June 1956. Al's biggest Hot 100 hits were "He" (which I've also posted) and "Unchained Melody", both in 1955. Original Billboard review: "Hibbler should rack up hefty plays with this impressive ballad. He warbles the tune's moving message with sincerity and sock emotional impact." Written by Herb Miller & Irving Berger. The other side of this single is "Away All Boats" which charted at #77.
