The High Line is a public park built on a 1.45-mile-long elevated rail structure running from Gansevoort Street to West 34th Street on Manhattan's West Side. It runs through the West Side neighborhoods of the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell's Kitchen The High Line was a freight rail line, in operation from 1934 to 1980. It carried meat to the meatpacking district, agricultural goods to the factories and warehouses of the industrial West Side, and mail to the Post Office. Section 1 of the High Line (Gansevoort Street to West 20th Street) opened in June, 2009. Section 2 (West 20th Street to West 30th Street) opened 8th June 2011. The city of Paris successfully converted a similar rail viaduct into an elevated park called the Promenade Plantée. Projects similar to the High Line are in early stages in St. Louis, Philadelphia, Jersey City, Chicago, and Rotterdam. Winter park hours are 7AM to 8PM. Spring, summer, and fall hours are 7AM to 11PM. The High Line is equipped with an innovative lighting design, so that the park can remain open in the evening. Access points are located at Gansevoort Street, 14th Street, 16th Street, 18th Street, and 20th Street. Elevators are located at 14th Street and 16th Street.

In spring, 2011, the second section of the High Line, from West 20th to West 30th Street, will open to the public, doubling the length of the park. Section 2 has new design features, including the High Line's first lawn, a steel walkway that rises 8 feet above the High Line level, and a wildflower field, among others. On september the 7th the who is who of Europe´s slackline-community met in the Czech village Ostrov to challenge themselves on the 103m long and 50m high highline, made of the newly developed AEON webbing by landcruising. After 2 days and numerous tries only the austrian Mich Kemeter managed walking the line fullman. Damian Jörren nearly succeeded but fell with just 10 more meters to go.
