Holloway was also a cast member of the Chicago troupe of Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope. Around this time, she met her future producer, manager, and husband Floyd Smith, and recorded "Rainbow '71" in 1971, a Curtis Mayfield song that Gene Chandler had recorded in 1963. It was initially released on the tiny Apache label, but shortly thereafter, it got picked up for national distribution by Galaxy Records. In the early 1970s, Holloway signed a recording contract with the Atlanta-based soul music label Aware, part of the General Recording Corporation (GRC), owned by Michael Thevis. Holloway recorded two albums for the label, both of them produced by Floyd Smith—Loleatta (1973) and Cry to Me (1975). Holloway later married Smith. Her first single from the second album, the ballad "Cry to Me" rose to #10 Billboard R&B and #68 on the Hot 100, but before the label could really establish Holloway, it went out of business.

motown is well known for making "the detroit sound" such a huge influence the world over. however, motown also had sessions taking place on the west coast and brenda holloway was perhaps the best-known artist to emerge from california. oddly, it seems that some of the best west-coast sessions from the sixties never saw the light of day. here is one of them... marc gordon and hal davis are responsible for this incredible take on the spinners' "how can i." it sounds like one of those august days where the heat is just a bit too intense, the sky jsut a bit too hazy and the air just a bit too still... all signs point to something harrowing just over the horizon; a potent storm brewing. marc and hal took the original song's tale of infidelity and amped the drama up a good 1 million percent. brutal is the opening: the horns that sound the warning alarm of love in jepordy. tympanis pound out the heartbeat of fear of a wrong discovered. the tempo mirrors the feeling one has when going through something awful and time seems to go in slow motion. the bass and guitar play on the narrator's complete agony with precision while the drums provide a very solid, even if taunting, backbeat. whoever the west coast musician were on this track, they created a music bed as good as anything that came from the detroit studios. over all of this, brenda sings in an amazingly understated (and yet still sexy) style. there's absolutely no doubt to her statement "but when i kissed him my heart just <b>...</b>
