Schleswig-Holstein, hallo!

hier der artikel: jetzt.sueddeutsche.de ENGLISH: sorry to those who don't understand German. this video is pretty much about how the "Realschule" (a kind of high school in Germany) in Schleswig-Holstein wrote their final thesis about me today. Which I find extremely funny, and basically I just wanted to say hello to everyone who wrote me about that. "Regular" videos coming again soon, if you're wondering where I've been and what I've been up to, feel free to click here www.youtube.com

Playful Holstein Calves

Our dog Blue shows you her new play things: Four spring calves! We went to the market in early March and bought three healthy two week old bull calves, and a smaller heifer that needed a little TLC. As you can see from the video, all four are doing very well now and growing. They have until late November to graze on lush green pastures while listening to bird songs before we send them "up north". In this video they are let out of their calf pen onto larger and larger runs, and finally onto pasture. Live Birth of Holstein Calf

To those with the uniformed comments... Well I'm not sure what kind of experience you have with calvings but I'll try to educate you and several other of the commentaters to this video. I am a dairy veterinarian so I deal with dystocias almost everyday. Dairy cows have a calf unassisted over 90% of the time. Occasionally the calf is malpositioned or very large and needs assistance to help both the cow and the calf have the best odds for survival. The poster of this video has a good explaination of the situation. The calf normally comes feet and head first, this calf was backwards. There are many other more complex and difficult presentations than a simple backwards calf. Most farmers pull these calves on their own rather than call a veterinarian like myself. This is fine as far as the veterinary profession is concerned. The calf may die while waiting for us to get to the farm and we train farmers on how to assist cows properly for these simple calvings. Farmers call us for the more complicated abnormal presentations beyond their ability to handle. They pulled this calf so that it didn't suffocate. The umbilical cord gets torn on the pelvic bone when the butt of the calf just starts to show, at that point it needs to come out in less than 90 seconds or it will likely die. The cow is clearly fully dialated to a trained eye as evidenced by the ease of pulling and size of the vulva. This cow is also larger than an average Holstein with very wide hips making it easy for her to ...
Brown Swiss x Holstein Crossbred Twins

The twins had just turned 8 years of age in early August. Their sire is a Brown Swiss bull named R Hart Christians Ace and the dam is Holstein sired by Tesk-Holm Valiant Rockie. The smaller cow has produced 140000 lbs of milk in 6 lactations and the larger cow produced 150000 of milk in 5 lactations. Heterosis plays a big part in their excellent health and longevity. Neither cow has ever had mastitis, ketosis, a displacement, or any other health problem.

Wandering Holstein Cow Chewing the Cud in the snow

Cow in the calf shed watching the snow fall . This cow likes to wander around the farm after milking. She opens the parlor door by pressing her nose against it until there is a small gap then pushes her nose through and opens it wide enough to get out. Always looks very happy and contented . Norstein -Norway Red x Holstein + Ireland's dairy crisis

Clipping my first milking Norstein (Norway red x Holstein) Similar to the Ayrshire breed - Smaller stature, good feet / legs , low SCC, easy care, high fat / protein % and may last more lactation's than the pure holstein. Listened to a farm week podcast on my ipod while clipping. Sounds like the milk price is even worse in Ireland than it is here.
Holstein cows grazing pasture on sunny July evening

My cows in a field next to the house. They graze this pasture at night. The river is at the bottom this field. The white lucente calf has appeared in earlier video's, dehorning and feeding with a bucket of milk. She's a big pet! A increasingly rare sight in this part of Scotland -A herd of dairy cows !. There is only a few dairy farms left in this area. The number of dairy farms in the UK has slumped 46% since 1997. Last year milk production in the UK fell to lowest levels in at least 30 years. The reason is simple - Disastrously low milk prices for the last 10 years

Holstein Non-Motorized Christmas Parade 2008

On Saturday, December 13th, 2008, the village of Holstein in the Township of Southgate, Ontario, Canada held their 16th annual old-time Christmas Parade. Unlike other Santa Claus Parades, the Holstein event allows only animals, humans, wagons, sleighs and buggies. No motorized vehicles take part. This unique event draws an audience from all over Southern Ontario, and every parking space for miles was taken long before the parade began. We hope you enjoy this video and hope all who watches will have the Happiest of Holidays for 2008.
