Honoré Daumier (February 26, 1808 -- February 10, 1879), was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, sculptor, and one of the most gifted and prolific draftsmen of his time. Daumier was born in Marseille to Jean-Baptiste Louis Daumier and Cécile Catherine Philippe. His father Jean-Baptiste was a glazier whose literary aspirations led him to move to Paris in 1814, seeking to be published as a poet.In 1816 the young Daumier and his mother followed Jean-Baptiste to Paris. Daumier showed in his youth an irresistible inclination towards the artistic profession, which his father vainly tried to check by placing him first with a huissier, for whom he was employed as an errand boy, and later, with a bookseller. The history of these paintings -- one of the most powerful evocations of love in the history of art -- is linked with the career of the Comtesse du Barry, the last mistress of Louis XV. For a pleasure pavilion she commissioned from the architect Ledoux in 1771, the countess ordered from Fragonard four canvases depicting "the four ages of love." They are the large canvases flanking the fireplace and to the right, on the adjacent south wall. Together they illustrate a love story such as any of us might have known. Beginning on the south wall, they advance from a flirtatious proposal (a young man springs out to offer a girl a rose), to a furtive meeting at the left (the lover scales the wall of a garden), to consummation or marriage on the other side of the fireplace (the girl crowns her lover with roses), to the calm enjoyment of a happy union (the reading of the love letters). Yet, for all their beauty and passion, Madame du Barry soon returned the canvases to the artist and ordered replacements from another. Were the resemblances between the red-coated lover and Louis XV potentially embarrassing? Did the exuberant canvases seem a little old-fashioned amidst the cool neoclassicism of Ledoux's avant-garde pavilion? For whatever reason, Fragonard was left holding onto his creations for another twenty years. Then, adding seven more canvases, he installed the lot in a cousin's villa in southern France.

The Daumier Register (www.daumier-register.org) is happy to present a 16mm-film on Daumier from 1985 of which only two copies still exist. Honoré Daumier (February 26, 1808 February 10, 1879) was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose works recreated the social and political life in 19th century France. He was a prolific draftsman who produced almost 4000 lithographs and 1000 wood engravings as well as approximately 1000 drawings, 500 paintings and almost 100 sculptures. He was perhaps best known for his caricatures of political figures and satires on everyday life of his countrymen, although posthumously the importance of his paintings has also been recognized. The Daumier Register has become a centre of information for collectors, researchers and museums supplying through their two websites in depth information about Daumiers life and work on the Internet. The first site, http gives general background information such as - biography - bibliography (some 2000 entries) - exhibitions (from 1849-2011, more than 1100 entries) - Daumier portraits by other artists - collectors guide - book illustrations and much more! The second site, www.daumier-register.org is an interactive database, which allows to research and view all of Daumiers 5000 prints.
