We Paiutes are related to the Hopi and other Pueblo people through language, customs and culture. We share very similar creation stories and legends. I've been waylaid by a broken leg (three weeks ago last Saturday) and won't be riding now probably until the fall, which is a bit demoralising. This week I've just about got to the stage where I can be upright for a while and can crutch around, although it takes a lot out of me (after this morning's activities, I had to sleep for several hours in the afternoon). Anyway. Here's some beginner work I'm doing with Hopi, the leery one. We're working on rapid reinforcement targeting to get him enthused by the idea of clickering - it seems to be working. Although he's not at all keen on my hopping from camera to bench, notice how quickly he comes back to the "target" (my outstretched fist). Later in the video, I'm trying to apply some Repel-X lotion around his eyes. He wasn't keen on the smell and by the time I'd clicked him into allowing me to smear around his eyes, the Repel-X lotion had all fallen off, but we got the idea (I did get the task done eventually, but by then the camera had shut off). Later still I'm working on having him let me rest my hand on his nose and be relaxed about it. Hopi's 7 years old but as best I can work out, wasn't well socialised and is very leery with people on the ground, particularly strangers. If you put a halter on him, he's much better, but at liberty he feels the need to leave most of the time. It doesn't take much pressure.
