Singer songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard performs music from his most recent album A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is no C) at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, TN. It wasn't that long ago that Ray Wylie Hubbard mentioned to an acquaintance that he wouldn't mind being a hybrid of Guy Clark and John Lee Hooker. Now, I'm no seer or mystic, but my instincts suggest that wish came true, and then some. A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is no C) confirms it. Ray Wylie Hubbard writes the kind of songs that make you want to ride along no matter where he's going, because you know it's gonna get strange somewhere along the way. The references to Muddy Waters being as deep as William Blake ("I really do believe it,'' Ray says) and lipstick pickups, resonator slides, the dreams of drunken poets, deceased call girls, opium, wasp's nests, clouds growing a tail, his ability to segue seamlessly from primal exclamations of carnal lust into songs about salvation without pausing for irony; and a craftsmanship that manages to rhyme mescaline and gasoline and Volkswagen with dragon while painting vivid portraits of characters both real and unreal, all evoke a sense of place that is larger than life but in no way made up. Anyone who's followed Ray Wylie Hubbard over the long and winding path he has traveled already knows he possesses the kind of exceptional gift for observation that any songwriter yearns for. His sense of wonder is tempered by an accumulated ...

- Double Take is an album by trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw recorded in November 1985 and released on the Blue Note label. It features performances by Hubbard, Cecil McBee, Carl Allen, Mulgrew Miller and Kenny Garrett. The album was Hubbard's first for Blue Note since recording The Night of the Cookers (1965) twenty years previously. The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow states "Hubbard still gets the edge (his range is wider and he cannot be surpassed technically). Although Shaw tended to play more harmonically sophisticated lines and is remarkably inventive, they are both trumpet masters".The album was followed by a second Hubbard/Shaw collaboration The Eternal Triangle in 1987 and the two volumes were combined for the double CD release The Complete Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw Sessions (1995). Track listing: "Sandu" (Clifford Brown) - 4:28 "Boperation" (Howard McGhee, Fats Navarro) - 4:56 "Lament for Booker" (Freddie Hubbard, JJ Johnson) - 6:22 "Hub-Tones" (Hubbard) - 6:25 "Desert Moonlight" (Lee Morgan) - 8:10 "Just a Ballad for Woody" (Woody Shaw) - 5:30 "Lotus Blossom" (Sam Coslow, Arthur Johnston) - 8:15 Personnel: Freddie Hubbard: trumpet, flugelhorn Woody Shaw: trumpet Kenny Garrett: alto saxophone, flute Mulgrew Miller: piano Cecil McBee: bass Carl Allen: drums

Frederick Dewayne Hubbard (7 April 1938 29 December 2008) was an American jazz trumpeter. He was known primarily for playing in the bebop, hard bop and post bop styles from the early 60s and on. His unmistakable and influential tone contributed to new perspectives for modern jazz and bebop. His early 1970s jazz albums Red Clay, First Light, Straight Life, and Sky Dive were particularly well received and considered among his best work. First Light won a 1972 Grammy Award and included pianists Herbie Hancock and Richard Wyands, guitarists Eric Gale and George Benson, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and percussionist Airto Moreira. Red Clay is a soul/funk influenced hard bop album recorded in 1970 by jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. It was his first album released on Creed Taylor's CTI label and marked a shift away from Hubbard's long time recording affair with Blue Note Records and another shift towards the more commercial soul-jazz sounds that would dominate his recordings in the later part of the decade.
