Hudud Part II: Evoking emotions

Part II of our story on Hudud: Evoking emotions, we speak to lawyer Saadiah Din, Sisters In Islam and The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST). While Saadiah supports the implementation of Hudud because she says, as a Muslim it's obligatory and perhaps the Islamic penal code is more needed than ever, SIS and the MCCBCHST are oppose to the idea for their own reasons.

Hudud Part III: The Aceh Experience

The Indonesian province of Aceh is in the midst of implementing Hudud into their justice system since achieving its 'Special Region' from the Indonesian central government. The Special Region came about from a 2001 peace treaty signed between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian government after years of guerrilla warfare. In 2003 Syariah law was formerly introduced and several Aceh provinces are implementing this law.
Ridhuan Tee: Hudud has to be implemented 'by force'

The only way to implement the Islamic hudud law is by implementing it "by force", Malaysian National Defence University lecturer Ridhuan Tee Abdullah said today. "To implement Islamic law and to educate non-Muslims (on Islam) can only be done by force," the associate professor told a forum entitled 'Hudud: Its dilemma and implementation' organised by Malay-language daily Sinar Harian in Shah Alam today. Qualifying his assertion, Ridhuan said this is because the "negative attitude" of non-Muslims towards Islamic law makes it unlikely that they will voluntarily accept its implementation. Hudud: Evoking emotions - Part 1

Every now and then, the question of 'hudud', the capital punishment in Islamic Syariah law, rears its head in Malaysia's socio-political environment. It brings up varying emotions from advocates and protagonists alike. At the moment, Syariah law in the country does not include criminal punishment -- that comes under the Federal Constitution and the penal code. Some Muslims feel that the entire spectrum of the Islamic legal system should be implemented and enforced upon Muslims. Its detractors say it would be un-Constitutional in the context of the present Constitution. Is Syariah criminal law implementable and enforceable in the present day in accordance with the manner the Prophet pbuh, enforced it? In Islamic penal law, there are four types: From WiKi: Hudood (hudud) is one of four categories of punishment in Islamic Penal Law: Qisas - meaning retaliation, and following the biblical principle of "an eye for an eye." Diyya - compensation paid to the heirs of a victim. In Arabic the word means both blood money and ransom. Hudud - fixed punishments Tazir - punishment, usually corporal, administered at the discretion of the judge
That Effing Show #65 - That Hudud That You Do

Hudud. Najib says no. Karpal says no. Muhyiddin says not yet. Anwar says just in Kelantan. Tok Guru says bring it on. Everyone is being respectful. Everyone is agreeing to disagree. And amidst all the noise, the rakyat is once again left totally and utterly confused as to what is right, as to what is wrong, and as to what is just plain irrelevant. This week, Ezra, Faiq, and special guest star and all around hottie Sarah Lian, try to clear things up for us. They try to separate the fact from the fiction, the chocolate from the vanilla. They try to answer that age old question of how you do that hudud that you do so well?

PAS: Hudud Umno's diversion

Also at the open house, PAS Youth chief Nasruddin Hassan said that hudud is part and parcel of the Islamic faith and it is the duty of all Muslims to discuss and know. However, he said that the issue should not have been "politicised or polemicised" but instead discussed in detail and in the proper manner. Nasruddin posits that only the BN government is keen to play up the matter in the media in order to obfuscate more important matters like fake ICs of dubious voters and the ISA. He reiterated the Islamic party's stand that as Islam is the agenda, they hope to see hudud implemented one day, but allayed allegations and fears that hudud will adversely affect non-Muslims. "This is for Muslims," assured Nasruddin. Full story: www.malaysiakini.com Camera: Hazlan Zakaria Editing: Tan Jiun Wuu
DPM: Malaysia not yet ready for hudud

While Umno in principle agrees with hudud law, multiracial Malaysia is still not ready for its implementation, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. "As Muslims, we must adhere to (Islamic) precepts," he told reporters after chairing the cabinet committee on supply and pricing in Putrajaya today. "We cannot implement because of situation and circumstance," he added further. The main concern he said is to widen the understanding about hudud before it can be implemented. He said this was important to maintain unity in Malaysia until all races and religious groups accept Islamic jurisprudence. "For now, it is not yet time (for hudud)," he stressed. Pakatan fails to reach consensus on hudud

Pakatan Rakyat today said they agreed to disagree on the thorny issue of the implementation of the hudud law when its top leaders failed to come to a consensus. Speaking after a meeting lasting about three hours ending at midnight, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said that the decision was to respect both PAS and DAP's divergent stand on the matter. "It's quite clear that DAP opposes it and PAS and PKR respect this... We acknowlege the differences in ideology in Pakatan, as a democraric coalition and this involves PAS' stand on syariah law," he said. malaysiakini.com

Mohd Amar Abdullah: We can compromise in the implementation of Hudud

State exco member for religious affairs Mohd Amar Abdullah however said that PAS, in particular its government in Kelantan has other ideas on hudud. "It is about a change of mindset. From viewing Islam as a ritual, to viewing Islam as a way of life. "This is via implementing Islamic policies and educating the rakyat, in preparation for their acceptance of Islam and hudud," said Mohd Amar. He explained that while the PAS led Kelantan government passed the hudud enactment in 1993, they did not implement it in toto immediately. Hudud and Syariah Compliant Penal Code in Brunei

Review to integrate Islamic laws into existing civil legislation Friday, October 14, 2011 BRUNEI Darussalam will soon see the creation of a unique hybrid legal system where Islamic laws are integrated into existing civil legislation, making them Syariah-compliant. All existing legislation in Brunei will be reviewed to ensure they are Syariah-compliant and amendments will be made to any sections that contradict Islamic law, said the Head of the Research and Law Review Division at the Attorney General's Chambers yesterday. "Instead of having a separate Act or set of laws to apply to Muslims, Syariah laws will be integrated into the existing Penal Code and other offences that are punishable under Hudud," said Senior Counsel Zuraini Hj Sharbawi. Hudud crimes are offences where punishment has been set by Allah (SWT). Hudud laws cover six areas: theft, illicit sexual relations, making unproven accusations of illicit sex, drinking intoxicants, apostasy and robbery. Zuraini explained that the reforms committee will be creating a new hybrid system that has not been seen anywhere in the world. "It would be unique and very special to Brunei... We're not using a model from another country this is His Majesty's vision." However, there are crimes which are not punishable under Hudud. These offences, called Takzir, will still be dealt with through the civil courts. "When we bring it together there will no longer be Syariah courts or civil courts, there will be Hudud courts and Takzir <b>...</b>
