The 1981 film Maybe This Time... has been justly forgotten--it's a dreary melodrma about a woman's repeatedly foolish choices in the dating world, with clumsy cinemtography and an unintentionally funny script. Many such films were made in the 70s and 80s, purporting to depict the complexities of the sexual revolution, but making the whole thing seem so joyless and limiting that they take on an unintended prudishness. But the film is an intriguing footnote in the career of Hugo Weaving, who would go on to much better things-- it's his very first onscreen appearance. He and a couple of other NIDA students were called in for a day's work. Hugo has two lines and wears the same black T-Shirt and beige overshirt in scenes that are supposed to take place months apart. But he already shows skill in presenting morally ambiguous, sly characters as he neatly telegraphs the ennui of the film as a whole. ;) Apologies for the poor video quality; this film is only available on 1982 VHS tapes.
