Princey is an adult female spotted hyena and look what I caught her doing! ***NOTE*** Striped hyena females have genitalia that closely resemble male genitalia due to their natural "engorgement." This hyena is definitely a female despite what it may look like. Do a Google search to find out more. In October of 2010 I spent two weeks volunteering at The Lion Park in South Africa. The Lion Park considers itself neither a zoo nor a reserve. There is more care and keeping of their animals than most zoos but there is also a bit more containment than most reserves. Princey was one of the resident hyenas seen on a daily basis by visitors to the park and the resident employees/volunteers. The Lion Park is an extremely humane and caring place for these animals to live and they are treated with the utmost respect and constant nurture. This video was captured out of pure coincidence.

Hyena Training
Here's some footage of some really cool training with hyenas at the Denver Zoo. The reinforcer is ground beef and it's given to the animals through a little chute. What you're seeing is mostly husbandry behaviors -- behaviors that make it easy for the trainers and veterinarians to take a look at and take care of the animal easily and with as little stress on the animal as possible. You'll see the hyena's open their mouths on cue, offer a leg for blood draws, and all kinds of cool stuff. Kinda makes you wonder why people have a hard time trimming their dog's nails after seeing this, huh?!
