Los Angeles, Calif. - Plan Ahead, Avoid The Area, Or Stay Home. That's the message public safety officials are sending to the public at a news conference on June 6 in anticipation of a planned 10-mile, 53-hour closure of the I-405 freeway between the US 101 and I-10 on the weekend of July 16-17, 2011 for planned demolition work on the Mulholland Bridge, part of a major I-405 improvement project. The Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Metro and Caltrans are informing the public in advance that if they do not have a critical need to be in or near the vicinity of the closure, they are being asked to avoid the area.

I took this for my non-LA friends. The 405 is 11 lane freeway that connects the westside of LA to the Valley. I hope you get the scale of how much traffic uses this freeway (and this wasn't even busy - you can see gaps between the cars). "In a city made for cars, why are bicycles getting places faster?" Los Angeles, CA (May 12, 2008) — Beginning in April, as commuters were mired in the typical Friday rush-hour traffic logjam, members of an organization calling itself CRIMANIMALZ [krim-an-i-muhlz] have taken to two of Los Angeles' busiest freeways on bicycles in a flash mob-type protest aimed at raising questions about transportation. Weaving in and out of choked traffic, cyclists surprised frustrated motorists with a spirited sprint on the region's most clogged and polluted arteries. More rides are planned. Friday, April 18th, 2008 The time (5:30 pm) and day (April 19) were carefully chosen after considerable research and scouting over a two-week planning stage. Based on unverified data and rider speculation, motor vehicles were moving at a speed between 5 and 10 mph. There was no strategy on what to do when actually on the freeway, as the group's riders agreed to an "every rider for themselves" approach in regards to possible police retaliation. Starting in Santa Monica, 15 bicyclists boarded the Cloverfield on-ramp (Santa Monica Fwy/I-10) and rode 0.87 miles to the Centinela off-ramp. They re-entered the 1-10 Fwy at Bundy and rode 0.44 miles to the I-405 N on-ramp and rode another 1.56 miles to the Santa Monica Blvd. exit. Friday, May 9th, 2008 At 5:30pm starting in Santa Monica, 28 bicyclists took surface streets to the 1-10 Fwy at Bundy and rode 0.44 miles to the I-405 N on-ramp and rode another 1.56 miles to the Santa Monica Blvd. exit during rush hour. The ramp to the I-405 N was a steep grade and 0.65 miles in length. Riders spanned a total of 2.0 freeway miles. The group of riders also hung a 20'x6' banner on the 17th street overpass overlooking the eastbound I-10 Freeway in Santa Monica that read RIDE A BIKE YOU'D BE HOME BY NOW. The sign remained in place for over 48 hours. Mission While the ride's political stance and agenda was neutral, many participants invoked the group's collective motto: "If you rode a bicycle, you'd be home by now!" -- a statement against oil dependency, in support of sustainable living and a collective critique of the Los Angeles transportation infrastructure. The riders are pointing out that in a city like Los Angeles made for cars, bicycle riders are reaching their destinations faster. Long Term Goals Members of the CRIMANIMALZ are looking for city officials to make bicycle safety a priority, not only through the creation of safe and easy places to ride, but also as a means of transportation on the city's increasingly busy thoroughfares. Been finding more time to battle recently which you all probably enjoy. After work today I found a match with a Youtuber named marat569, who wanted a Youtube battle. Finding the challenge a bit intriguing, I accepted (and since I had some more new guys I wanted to try out). I thought I would expiriment with Chansey for the sole reason that it wasn't Blissey (which I solemnly swear to never use), but it seems the Pokemon Gods told me that I'm not meant to use Chansey, either.. whatever. I was kind of pissed off so decided to do 405 for as many reps as I could. I haven't really squatted more than three reps in a set in a while (at least not this calendar year). I was going for 12 and thought the last successful rep was #12. Pretty disappointed in this, but squatting strength is not a priority in my current goals.

This is a quick compare review between a garmin forerunner 110 and a 405. Our local outfitter store, Trail Shop provided me with a demo unit and I ran with the unit for about 20 km which forms the basis of my review. I will use the 405 as the comparison. overall the device is small & sexy than the 405 and much more appealing as a wearable watch. The power save & power off feature means that you only need to charge the unit every 3 weeks. But with normal use, I seem to charge it every week. The display is nice and clean and provided the basic data fields: distance, timer, date, lap pace and heart rate. Features that this unit does not have: auto-scroll, auto-pause, courses, history management, interval training, advanced workouts, data fields customization, & navigation. While most of us don't use a majority of these features, it is a specific runner that will find the 110 the perfect unit for them. Personally, I liked the 110 and wished it included auto-scroll & auto-pause. However if you do a lot of custom workouts, this probably won't be the unit for you. But if you are a beginner or long distance runner with no interest in micro managing your runs, than this would fit in.Special thanks to Trail Shop for providing the GPS for review. The best way is to view the acquisition of fine footwear as a long term investment rather than as an expense. Note this is basically the same boot that J. Crew sells, except with the original Alden 405 side stitching. I got these from the Alden shop in San Francisco. The J. Crew version is slightly different in that they customized the side stitching pattern for their version; which looks worse in my opinion.
