NASA | IBEX Spacecraft Observes Matter from Interstellar Space
A great magnetic bubble surrounds the solar system as it cruises through the galaxy. The sun pumps the inside of the bubble full of solar particles that stream out to the edge until they collide with the material that fills the rest of the galaxy, at a complex boundary called the heliosheath. On the other side of the boundary, electrically charged particles from the galactic wind blow by, but rebound off the heliosheath, never to enter the solar system. Neutral particles, on the other hand, are a different story. They saunter across the boundary as if it weren't there, continuing on another 7.5 billion miles for 30 years until they get caught by the sun's gravity, and sling shot around the star. There, NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer lies in wait for them. Known as IBEX for short, this spacecraft methodically measures these samples of the mysterious neighborhood beyond our home. IBEX scans the entire sky once a year, and every February, its instruments point in the correct direction to intercept incoming neutral atoms. IBEX counted those atoms in 2009 and 2010 and has now captured the best and most complete glimpse of the material that lies so far outside our own system. The results? It's an alien environment out there: the material in that galactic wind doesn't look like the same stuff our solar system is made of. IBEX Maps Heliopause
NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft has made it possible for scientists to construct the first comprehensive sky map of our solar system and its location in the Milky Way galaxy. The IBEX spacecraft was launched in October 2008. Its science objective was to discover the nature of the interactions between the solar wind and the interstellar medium at the edge of our solar system. The sky map was produced with data that two detectors on the spacecraft collected during six months of observations. The detectors measured and counted particles scientists refer to as energetic neutral atoms. The energetic neutral atoms are created in an area of our solar system known as the interstellar boundary region. This region is where charged particles from the sun, called the solar wind, flow outward far beyond the orbits of the planets and collide with material between stars. The energetic neutral atoms travel inward toward the sun from interstellar space at velocities ranging from 100000 mph to more than 2.4 million mph. This interstellar boundary emits no light that can be collected by conventional telescopes. The energetic neutral atoms are created in an area of our solar system known as the interstellar boundary region. Mission Update: IBEX
With each new probe to a neighboring planet, with each new science mission to study our sun, the moon, another heavenly body, we add to our growing knowledge and understanding of our solar system. Yet, as weve come to know much of how things are in our small corner of the cosmos, were still in search of one fundamental answer. What are the boundaries of our Solar System? What of the areas that surround and separate us from what lies beyond? Willis S Jenkins: "We would like to look beyond what other missions have accomplished and have done such as voyager 1 and 2." From the sun flows the solar wind. It inflates the bubble surrounding our solar system. This heliosphere protects Earth, and every living thing on our planet, from dangerous galactic cosmic rays. But how? How does the heliospehere interact with the harsh environment of the Milky Way galaxy to keep us safe? A new mission, IBEX, the Interstellar Boundary Explorer, is about to search for answers. Willis S Jenkins: "The outer boundary that we have now we kind of defined it through again previous missions. We have somewhat of a clear picture, but this would go again. This would be a better definition of where it is." I think that this band deserves more attention because for me is among the 3-4 best of neo-psychedelic-folk groups in the planet! Some critics: Brad Rose (25 May, 2005) Feathers have been getting a lot of attention from various circles for the past few months. This collective of artists hails from the Northeast and has connections to the likes of Devendra Banhart, Nick Castro, and others. "Gnomeozoic Live" is the first availble CD-R, and though it is highly limited, it's quite memorable. One listen and you'll understand why this band has been receiving high praise. On this recording, Feathers consists of eight members. These three tracks were recorded live, but with that many people involved it's never sparse or boring. "Old Black Hat With a Dandelion Flower" opens the set with hypnotically catchy melodies and bright, shimmering acoustic guitars. Layers of percussion and bass finish out the mix, but it's the vocals that really stand out here. The high-register twang that falls somewhere between Dylan and Banhart is instantly endearing. As the track progresses, you can imagine this being perfumed in the smoky halls of a San Francisco commune. Feathers continue their hazy psychedelic journey with the quiet lullaby-like "Past the Moon." There's this beautifully innocent romantic feeling to this track that I can't escape. NUBIAN IBEX
The Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) is a desert-dwelling goat species found in mountainous areas of Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Ethiopia, Yemen, and Sudan. It is generally considered to be a subspecies of Alpine ibex, but is sometimes considered specifically distinct (Capra nubiana). The wild population is estimated at 1200 individuals. Nubian ibexes stand around 65--75 cm / 2.1-2.6 ft tall at the shoulder and weigh around 50 kilograms (110 lb). Nubian ibexes are a light tan colour, with a white underbelly, in males there is also a dark brown stripe down the back. Nubian ibexes have long thin horns which extend up and then backwards and down. In males these reach around a metre in length while in females they are much smaller (around 30 cm/12 in). Detail of head Nubian ibexes live in rough dry mountainous terrain where they eat mainly grasses and leaves and are preyed upon by leopards, eagles and bearded vultures. Nubian ibexes live in herds composed solely of males or females. They are diurnal, they are active during the day and rest during the night.
