
On March 4th, 2010, the Nashville City Center, in conjunction with the University of Tennessee and the Department of Rehabilitation Services Corporate Connections held an inaugural Accessibility Event at Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee. The purpose was to bring the design, construction, facility management and disability communities together and start a dialogue about Accessibility. The event consisted of a panel discussion, 3 continuing education opportunities, an experiential area, and a showcase of 34 vendors. The panel discussion brought in 5 experts in the disability field: Jim Benesch a rheumatoid arthritis advocate, John Harris, Director of Disabled Student Services at MTSU who is also blind, Lori Crawford, Counselor for Vocational Rehabilitation who is also hard of hearing, Kenton Dickerson, Independent Living Specialist at the Center for Independent Living of Middle Tennessee, and Stephanie Brewer Cook, ADA and Disability Services Coordinator for the City of Knoxville, who is also in an wheelchair. Carole Moore-Slater, director of Tennessee Disability Pathfinder, gave a presentation about Access Nashville, a program of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. There were two lunch-time CEUs on Universal Design from Greg Binkley with Kohler, and on Inclined and Vertical Wheelchair Lifts and the ADA from John Tolar with United Elevator Services.
